Editing Software - 01-20-2011, 02:14 PM

Corel's - PaintShop Photo Pro X3
Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 - Photo Editing Software

Has anyone used it?

First off I would like to say that I do know Adobe Photoshop.

I need to purchase a software program so that I can "edit" pictures. However, I do not do much editing to my work.
I resize
I use the dodge and burn tools
I use levels a little
I use the clone stamp and eraser tool some

What does Photoshop do that this program does not do?

Any suggestions?

Scott

Sounds to me like your are getting everything you need out of Photoshop. But of course, it depends which version you are using. I bought Paintshop back when also...and never used it. Stick with Photoshop and continue learning. Better to be proficient with one, than just good at two, I say.

What version of Photoshop do you have? Lightroom 3.x might be all you need.

I have 6.0... yeah.... old... But it has what I need in actuality... I saw that the Corel software that I listed is able to "edit" video as well... That kind of interests me since I have a 7D and would like to make some home movies and do some side projects... Not looking to get into much video but thought that Corel might be a decent all in one package...

If you are looking for alternatives... check out GIMP or digiKam. Both are great and free (they are what I use). I don't suggest moving to them if you have and like what you are with - but they are free and certainly do the job.

I would suggest staying with Adobe. You can get a combo pack of Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premier Elements for $119 (sometimes you can find it for $89 on sale). This would keep you with software you are familiar with and give you the ability to work with videos.

Yes, you can use portraiture with Elements 9, and other types of plug ins will work too!

Stay with Adobe. I think there is a much bigger community for Adobe products and a lot more free plugins and actions available. I use LR most of the time and PS Elements for portraits that need skin smoothing and then I use free actions for that.

PS Elements can be had for under $50 at times. LR 3 is VERY powerful and can be had for $200 I think.

reverse the question - what does photoshop do that lightroom does not.

lightroom is great for management of a photo library and all of the basic editing you mentioned. it makes it easy to create books, slideshows, and printing. it even has the ability to run some of the same plugin packages such as those from Nik software.

You do not get all of the layering and advanced editing options available in photoshop, but it sounds like you wouldn't be missing those features..
