I've used Picasa so far for viewing my raw files and choosing which ones to process. The nice thing about Picasa is that you can let a full screen slideshow run and then simply "star" the image you want to process. This way you can later work on the "starred" images (open them in PS) and delete the ones without star.
This is really the only feature of Picasa I'm using but for some reason I don't like Picasa and would love to replace it with a simple viewer that can do what I described above.

It should be ...
* small, fast and simple
* able to show raw files (.nef)
* letting me to mark/"star" an image for further processing
* free or unexpensive

Any recommendations?

which photoshop are you using? maybe time to upgrade to a newer photoshop, one that includes Bridge. Great program that does all that you have described and more.

I have Bridge (CS5), never used it though.
I just gave it a try but it seems like I can't mark/star an image while viewing it in a slideshow or in Full Screen Preview.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Never mind, I'm an idiot. It does work and I can "approve" images while watching the slideshow.

Thanks for the tip, Dan. Problem solved.
