Nikon Transfer Software Issue - 04-11-2011, 03:14 PM

Please forgive my lack on software knowledge, but I recently bought Capture NX2 and with it came Nikon Transfer. I recently tried to download pictures from my camera to the computer (a Mac) using Nikon Transfer. I am having two issues: 1) It didn't seem to leave me an option of where I wanted to have my images stored and 2) the main issue is that when I hit the button to transfer the images, it says it is transferring but it just stays on transferring the whole time and never gives me an update on how many images have been transferred or if it is even working at all. After three or four minutes I got impatient and stopped the transfer. I was trying to transfer about 50 Raw images, so maybe the larger files were slowing it down.

I am only familar with Iphoto and with it you can see the images being transferred so you at least get some real time feedback on whether or not your images are transferring to your computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Your Nikon Transfer screen should look like the attachment. Under the Primary Destination tab, you can define where you want your files to be stored. You can also define a secondary location as well.

As for the status of the copy, it should be at the bottom of your screen, "Transfer Queue" along with the progress bar.

Larry, I am at work so not on my iMac but I will try from memory.

There are a series of tabs across the top of the applications. The first tab describes your media, what you are transferring from. I generally set it up for cameras and storage.

The second tab, I think, describes your primary and backup destination. Click on the radio button if you want to use something other than the default. I download my files to both a primary and backup location during download. I got bit by that one already. Also, there should be a check box weather to leave the images on storage media or erase after transfer. Choose your poison.

The third tab is for your extended meta data. I put in my copyright and current year information. I set a title for my photo project, and maybe a description of the photo session.

In the latest version, the third tab is "My Picturetown" and the fourth tab is meta data.

At the bottom of the application, down below where the thumbnails, is the start transfer button. The photos transfer in reverse order. I think there is a status bar that comes up but I never sit around to watch it. I usually start a download and then get a snack. It is about to be a long day at the computer once the pics are downloaded.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I did get the screen you attached so I need to look more closely at it. I just don't remember seeing the progress bar.

As for long transfer times, do you have your camera connected directly via USB or are you using a card reader? If a card reader, what type, firewire, USB?

So youre connecting your camera directly via the USB cable to your mac, that transfer wont be breaking any speed limits. :) Usually you'll get a faster transfer rate with a card reader.
