Converting NEF to RAW - 05-08-2011, 06:36 PM

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I just can't seem to find the right thread...

Quite simply, I just want to work with my .nef files in PS as a raw file. Do I need to convert them first? Is there a plug in for PS Elements 8 that I need?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

NEF is Nikon Electronic Format or Nikon's version of RAW. If you are having difficulty in element you may need to download the plug in from Adobe to support you camera.

You'll need to get the Adobe Camera Raw Update from Adobe if you're having issues opening the .NEF files.

That may be easier said than done. I'm finding many that have tried to update the ACR plug-in on PSE8, to no avail. Here is another solution:

Discussion Forums @ Nikonians - Capture NX2 or Photoshop Elements 8

If you are having issues after updating Adobe Camera Raw, then you'll want to read this thread, it looks like you'll need to upgrade your software(Elements 8 to 9 or go to Photoshop CS5 as CS4 does not support D7000 NEF files)

The Old Catch 22....

Buy new software or buy an older camera. Go figure.

It's simple (enough): Your D7000 came with ViewNX2. Install it and use it to 'convert' (really export, as it leaves your NEF's alone) from NEF to 8-bit TIF, as Elements will open and view but not edit 16-bit files.

So doing will allow you to open the .TIF in either ACR or directly into Elements 8.

OR you can go to the newest Elements. PSE9 allows you to install the most current version of ACR, which supports the D7000. You can buy it from Amazon, currently $79. A $20 rebate nets your final cost to $59, but last week they were featuring it at $59/$39. IDK when or if that promo will repeat. Even the current price should be within reach for a D7000 owner, unless you broke the piggy bank to buy it.
