Aperture v. Lightroom? - 04-25-2007, 01:13 PM

Hi,

Does anyone use either or both of these? Just wondering what your thoughts were.

They seem a little more complex compared to Canon's DPP software that I am used to.

Thanks,
Chris

I use Lightroom as the begining of my workflow. It's a great raw processing tool. It is very memory hungry though. You will want 2gigs or more to keep it moving.

I've only played with Aperture, and wasn't fond of it, but I cut my teeth on Adobe products, so it was easier to make the transition to lightroom.

One of the major fuctions that Lightroom has, and I didn't see in Aperture is the curves function. It might be in the upgraded version, but I have yet to see it on aperture.

Either one vs. DPP is going to be an upgrade. DPP is a nice atarting point, but Canon is not in the photo processing business, and they only provide a basic software to go with their camera's.

You can get a free 30 day trial of Lightroom on Adobe's website. Keep in mind, you need lots of ram. It crashed both my PC, and Mac with only one gig of ram. As I said, you will want at least 2 gigs, but 3 is better, and that is what I run on PC and Mac.

Chris -

I have also used LR for the begining of my workflow and I like it. Both of the computers that I use with LR have 2gigs of memory which really hleps. I just sent to the Lightroom Live sponsored by NAPP with Scott Kelby talking about his workflow and I think my workflow will be a little more efficent with some of the advice he gave in his one day seminar.

I have seen aperture, but since I use windows it is not a possibility for me. I did watch a demo and it looked pretty good as well.

Scott

Thanks for the info. I do have 2gb on my Macbook, and 1gb on my pc desktop. I haven't tried LR yet but will give the demo a try.
