Why are my picutres so grainy in photoshop? - 06-09-2011, 01:56 PM

It's been driving me nuts and I've tried quite a few things to fix it. I load my photos in regular windows viewer and they are crisp and clear. When I open them in Photoshop CS3 to start editing, they are incredibly grainy and it throws me off completely. This is also a brand new HP computer I bought a couple weeks ago, so it's not like it's running on an old operating system.

I also noticed when I do the patch tool, it will not completely replace the area that I need. I am thinking something is wrong with color channels or something!

Thanks for your help :)

Yep. Useless thread without pictures.

ps: Read the quote in my signature. Digital don't do grain. What you got is something else.

So this was the first time I used the portable studio and we had to do it at their daycare. (The white looks like crap)

ISO was at 600 I think. I'm at the point where I need to just hire someone who does photoshop for a living to fix these and keep working on the studio stuff.

Weird thing is even when I open photoshop on a picture I know for a fact is crystal clear, it distorts it and makes it grainy too.

Monica,

I do not see the grain your speaking of, but, when working with a raw file you will see more grain than you will in a preview on the back of your camera. Keep in mind that the LCD at the back of your camera will almost always make an image look much better, as it is optimized to do so (at least in my experience).

With that said, there are certainly some other issues that we may be able to help with, but since you did not ask for that information, I will not offer it unless you would like to hear some feedback?

I would also check the in camera settings. These are normally applied to the embedded JPEG which is what is displayed on the camera LCD even when shooting Raw and in the previews of most photo processing apps. I do not recall the OP stating the camera being used. Obviously, the camera is supported in CS 3 or the Raw file would not have opened, but I wonder if the CS 3 installation was updated (especially ACR) when installed on the new computer.
