I think you should strive to capture the best possible image possible for each piece you plan to show. If you don't have a light box, google DIY Light Box. There are a lot of ways to build a simple and inexpensive light box that will enable you to take some good pics, regardless if you are using a point and shoot camera or a DSLR.

A free program such as Picasa or Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro would allow you to make adjustments. Color balance is important and whatever program you use should have that capability. Shoot in RAW format and adjust your white balance so the colors look good.

I concur. I don't know a lot about product photography, but making a product look good, crisp, and clear is not done in post, but is mostly due to good lighting. I'm sure there are a ton of resources about commercial/product photography here, and all over the web.

If you think that this will be too difficult for you or you don't have the time for this plus your business, you might want to consider hiring someone to take the photos for you. Maybe a student or someone who is looking to build their portfolio would be willing to do it for cheap.
