I could be wrong but I do not think it is possible.

You can only stack if the two images are in the same folder.

Is there an way then to link the files somehow-in different folders, i mean lets say you have your original, then another layered tiff, then a flattened web file-isn't there some way to link them?

Quick or smart collection. Maybe. Try it. Let us know if it worked.

LR will not stack files (RAW, jpeg, tiff, or psd) that are in different folders.

I just tried to stack files by using Collection and Smart Collection. They do not work either.

Just out of curiosity, why are you separating the files into different folders?

just thought it would be nice to have a separate folder for each type of output files, like website or facebook or flicker or to print or layered files. i guess i could just use collections instead and just stack them in the original folder.

My biggest issue with Lightroom is that it wants to save the photoshop files with the RAW files. I save them in separate locations for archive reasons - this is well described by Peter Krogh in his book, The DAM Book. I fit all of my RAW files in buckets as described by Peter such that I have them in a directory that fits on to a DVD. Any derivatives of the files get archived on an multiple hard drives.
