mmm...what is the issue in LR - 07-06-2011, 11:50 AM

lately I have been having problems with importing photos from an hard drive into LR. Only a couple of the photos in each batch have an issue and I'm wondering if something is going bad on the computer....

My guess would be file corruption, although usually LR won't recognize corrupted files (at least it doesn't recognize mine at all). Maybe try opening them with another program to see if they look ok? If they're raw, your camera should have software to handle the raw files.

Ok, that's just weird. I've never run into that problem with LR, although I'm using v2, and I've only been using it for a year or so.

Could be the card reader. I've never had this issue with any version of LR, and I've been using it since v1.

If the files are fine on the card and hard drive then the problem seems to be LR.

Open one of the seemingly broken images using PS ACR and if they are still flawed then it is the image. If it is fine then LR needs help.

I have noticed the same issue, but only occassionally. I think I solved the problem by moving all files that I am working on to a drive "in" the computer. Normally I store data on a removable/external drive. I started doing this, I don't experience any problem.

About quarterly, I move data no longer needed on the drives to a DVD for storage. Usually create a backup of that DVD to store at my step-daughter's home.

I have seen this issue before the jpeg preview got corrupted. When this happened to me I made a slight adjustment and the thumbnail was back to normal.

It could be corruption of the preview cache.

I know with Bridge/ACR there's an option to export the cache to the image folders rather than using centralized cache. Does LR have such an option? If so enabling it might be a good idea. THen if you see the problem you can clear the cache for just that folder and it will regenerate.

I thnk Jeff is dead on, the thumbnail cache is corrupt. Do what I mentioned in ACR and that will confirm.

If the file renders as corrupt in ACR then the file on disk must be corrupt. Since you said re-copying the files from the card will usually fix the issue, it sounds like either the target hard drive or the card reader is intermittently causing the corruption. If you have another card reader, try using that for a while to see if the problem persists or not. But I would make sure you get everything on that drive backed up in case it is failing.

Can you read it from the card directly into PS?

I doubt the drive is going bad, my guess is there was corruption in transfer.

Renae, call me tomorrow night and I will remote in. Have the camera connected. Also, in the mean time email me the raw file off your camera and one that you are opening.
