Layered backgrounds? - 07-19-2011, 12:57 PM

I’m a relatively new Photographer trying to build up my business. I found a site that is selling layered Photoshop backgrounds that seem pretty cool! Haven’t seen anything like this before…anyone have an opinion or experience with this company?

I'm not impressed. They all look cheesy, fake, and generic. Not my cup of tea.

Checked out the site and gotta say that the backgrounds are rather generic. I deal with a lot of photoshop work and maybe the experience is clouding my judgment, but are you looking at using these backgrounds for quick turn around? I can see the advantage of using 'stock' Photoshop layers if you're doing school team shots or something. If you wanted to go this route, it might be more rewarding to shoot your own backgrounds instead of using these. Taking a crash course in Photoshop to do your own layering can be quite gratifying. Personally, I feel using actual locations for my backgrounds is much better than using composites. My 2 cents.

Paying clients don't want to be plastered on a background for a cool effect. Maybe it makes for a nice State Fair memento from a photo booth. But for real portraits, or real action shots, they want to be doing whatever it is, where ever it is for themselves. They would rather be kicking a soccer ball on their own field or backyard. They want a bridal portrait in a place that has some meaning for them.

To sum it up, I have found people want a REAL experience. Create it, sell it, give it to them and they will pay for it.
