Upgrading from PSE6 to PSE9 - 07-23-2011, 07:59 PM

I've been using photoshop elements 6 for a couple of years and have downloaded many free filters, etc. I'm wanting to upgrade to elements 9 (my computer doesn't have enough room for CS upgrades) and wonder how to do it without losing all my freebies.

Also, would I first need to delete PSE6 and then install PSE9? Sorry, I'm a dummy when it comes to computer stuff...

1: If you do not have room for a PSE9 download you need to clean your drive up, most need some free space to use as paging space

2: I would do a clean install of PSE9

3: The filters should be able to transfer over, but since PSE6 is so out of date they might not be compatible

4: Have you thought of LR instead of a new pse9? You can still use pse6 for editing but LR has so much more.

Rich, I don't know anything about LR. My laptop has CS3, but I mainly use my desktop (PSE6) for editing because I have a wide screen monitor. How would that help me? Wouldn't I then be having to edit in two different programs?

Take a tour of LR and demo it.

I bet that you will never use PSE again unless you have to swap a head or something.

I was a loyal pse6 user. Note the word WAS. I now use LR3 and holy moly! I don't know what I saw in pse6. I still use it a little but LR is what I use 90% of the time now. Get it. Love it. :)

Thank you for validating my opinion. I too love LR and do 90 percent on it. Very much worth a look.

I recently added PSE 9 from PSE4 and love it. I did not in my case do a clean install as I was not sure how well 9 would work with Mac which is what I use and have had no problems but I have alot of disc space since I have a backup. I'm still learning how to do a lot of things with it but love it.

Thanks for the LR suggestion. I'll check it out. My biggest problem is learning a new program. It's taken me years to master PSE6, and I really depend on the filters I've downloaded over the years.

Always something to learn, isn't there?

It looks like you have to have CS5 or at least one of the CS programs to be able to run Lightroom? I don't have room for any of the CS programs on my desktop. That's why I have PSE6.

Lightroom is independent of CS.

When you say "don't have room" what do you mean? Hard Drive is full?

LR is only 250 or so meg and runs totally independant of Photoshop/PSE. Also, you can have LR open PSE if you want by setting PSE as a external editor. Literally if you need to edit a picture in PSE you right click on it and select edit in PSE. Pretty easy.

LR also works with Raw files from your camera effortlessly.

Hmmm, maybe it's time for me to leave elements 5.

Not enough room means not enough RAM.
