Nikon cameras saving files in separate folders...? Why?

This is a discussion on Nikon cameras saving files in separate folders...? Why? within the Post Processing Central forums, part of the Photography Information category; I am just wondering why Nikon cameras save files in separate folders...? Canon cameras put all the images in one ...

Nikon cameras saving files in separate folders...? Why? - 11-03-2011, 12:00 PM

I am just wondering why Nikon cameras save files in separate folders...? Canon cameras put all the images in one folder. Nikon cameras decide to put files above a certain number in separate folders... Why? What is the logic? I am sorry if this question is too basic.

My Canon creates a new folder automatically and start putting files in the new folder when filename needs to recycle (example: img9999.jpg to img0001.jpg). Is that the case with you?

To prevent potentially writing over the old files with the same name?

Mine has done that, but not recently. I usually download my photos and format the card more often.
I think when it reaches #DSC_0999, it starts a new folder with DSC-0001.

I've been shooting RAW and JPEG, maybe THAT is why I don't have multiple folders anymore -- my cards aren't big enough.

Yeah, that happens to me (and I shoot canon). I think it has to do with how the camera names the pictures.
