It looks I maybe dealing with Capture One for the M8 if I want to use the lens coding features.
Anyone here routinely use Capture One? Any Third party Guides on it's use? Should I consider Pro or stick with LE?
How does it fit with CS2 for the rest of the workflow?
Anything I should have asked but didn't?

Hi John,
I use C1 Pro, and it's a pretty intuitive program. What I like the best is the ability to handle many different camera types color settings (As I will now have to deal with 3 of them).
C1 makes my processing super easy. It works well with CS2

C1 makes my processing super easy. It works well with CS2 | like wise...but never use the lens coding...at all. the program is VERY VERY USER FRIENDLY! I only read the manual after I had been using it for about 6 months.
WB and color is a snap...it actually used the Kelvin Scale which for me takes the guess work outta white balance....too many years as a Videographer i guess.
I batch out all my files as TIFF in C1 then do touch ups in PS. Makes life much easier. Adjusting WB and exposure in ACR just blew...for me at least. Been using C1 for 3 years now and wouldn't know what to do without it.

Any advantage of the Pro version over the LE? I get LE with the M8 but they give very little for an upgrade from LE to Pro.

You are limited on features with the LE verison. I too, like the others have used C1 for years, and like it MUCH better than ACR. I just can't reproduce the color I get with C1 in ACR. You can't go wrong with it. I think if you buy a San Disk extreme III card right now, it comes with LE and a coupon for pro,
Chris

here is a list of differences between pro and le http://www.phaseone.com/Content/Soft...WhyGoPRO.aspx#

What about the lens coding features works with Capture 1 but not with Camera Raw? I thought one of the nice features of the M8 was the use of the DNG format for raw, which is readable out of the box by any number of software packages, unlike the other companies' insistance on using a proprietary RAW format. Is it something to do with the EXIF info that Capture 1 takes advantage of?

There are a couple of features in Capture 1 that are only available on the Mac version.. Not sure that matters to you or not.. I have played around with C1 and while I like the color it produces, I am not that found of it's workflow. Of course, the only workflow that I really enjoyed was from RSP, but that isn't available any longer and had its own set of flaws.

Sooooo.... would you say that the organizational/cataloging features in C1 are at least as good as the other apps? What about meta data, keywords, renaming files, moving files, etc?
And what about speed? When making adjustments to a single image, how does C1 compare? I find Aperture to be very slow and I find Lightroom to be fine but with room for improvement.
Thanks! | | | |

Duffy | You can use the DNG with any packege which supports it. but CP1 has special color profiles developed for the M8 by Leica and Phase One. At least the LL review thinks they do a better job than ACR.
The Lens coding it now appears only applies to in camera tiffs or JPEG's.

The question, I guess, is whether the market is big enough for ACR to improve their profiles. Adobe has always touted itself as "the" high end solution, so I would think that they would strive to be competitive in this section of the market. So, how long would you be willing to wait? If ACR comes up with competitive profiles in, say, three months, would that be too late? (Of course, its probably impossible to find out whether they have plans to do this or not, so the mere fact that it makes sense for them to do it probably shouldn't be enough to effect your decision.)
