Book Recommendations? - 11-28-2006, 07:35 PM

I'm looking for recommendations on what book to work through next.

I started with Photoshop about a year ago when I got my 20D. So far I've worked through the following books: Kelby, Elements 3 for Digital Photographers, and Photoshop Channels Book. Margulis, Professional Photoshop 4th Edition, and The Canyon Conundrum. Of the two, I like Margulis' approach much better. I like to have recipes, but I also like to know why something works. I've read each of the Margulis books twice, and am on my third go round on Professional Photoshop.

My candidates for a next book so far are 1) Retouching and Restoration by Eismann; 2) Masking and Compositing also by Eismann; 3) Adobe Photoshop Master Class by Campinigro; or 4) the upcoming 5th Edition of Professional Photoshop.

I'm also willing to listen to other ideas. Basically, I want something that will push my abilities with this software and make me think at the same time.

Thanks in advance,

Duffy

Are you using Photoshop Elements, or Photoshop CS2?

Something to check out is video podcasts - PhotoshopTV, Photoshop Creative Suite Video Podcast, Photoshop Online Video Podcast, and PixelPerfect with Bert Monroy.

All are iTunes video podcasts that you can watch from your desktop (via iTunes) or your iPod.

I use Photoshop CS for editing, not CS2. And I use Elements 3 for the file organizer.

I will check out the podcasts. There are two things I like about books. When working through an example, I prefer reading from a book and working from a computer to switching between windows on the computer. And of course, I can take a book with me to lunch.

If you want to use Bridge/Camera RAW check out Bruce Fraser's Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS (he has one for CS2 also).

I've also liked having The Photoshop CS Bood For Digital Photographers (also a CS2 version of this). Quick step by step reference - not so much an instructional book as a quick reference.

Would be my suggestion. Tons of good advice in it about things you will be able to use. Also has good advice about work habits and workflow.

For learning the basics of Photoshop, the "Classroom in a Book" books are a good place to start. Beyond that, the "Studio Techniques" would be a next step. Scott Kelby's Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers is probably one of the best for learning how to post process images.

My picks with a bias to CS2.

Real World Color Managment

Color Management for Photographers

Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2

Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One
