Howdy All,
Foreward: I am new to the forum and to the game of DSLR and associated software programs which, therefore may cause me to ask very simple questions. Your patients is very much appreciated.
Issue:
I took some Christmas day pics with the XTi that Santa so graciously left. I downloaded both the raw and jpg files onto the hard drive in one folder using photoshop elements 5.0 with the latest Camera Raw 3.6 installed.
My problem arises when I open DPP and choose the folder containing both the raw and jpg files. I get "DPPViewer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close....". I cannot do anything else but close the program. I then seperated the cr2 and jpg files to different folders. Opening the folder containing the cr2 files is no problem and the pics open in the viewer. When I open the folder containing the jpg files, I get the DPPViewer.exe error again.
It seems that DPP does not want to open jpg files but cr2 files are OK. The funny thing is that DPP will open all of my jpg files taken from and old Olympus P&S camera. I took more pics again in both raw and jpg and tried the whole scenario again. It does the same thing. I reinstalled DPP and made sure I have the lastest version but still get the error.
Can anyone shed any light as to why DPP will not open jpg files taken with the XTi?
Thanks for ya'lls time and patience. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I am not sure of what version of DPP you are running but you can click on the help button and it will tell you. If it isn't version 2.2 then it isn't the latest update. Here is a link to download the latest update if you need it http://alpha03u.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?SV=WWUCA900. I hope this helps.
That link doesn't appear to translate. Try this one. You may have to do a software search for a different model like the 30D to find the update to DPP. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...wnloadIndexAct

Thanks Glen I just updated my DPP.
Daniel, you wouldn't be running photoshop elements 5.0 with the latest Camera Raw 3.6 and Digital Photo Professional at the same time would you? I can see where there might be a conflict if both programs are open to the same files.

Howdy Glen and Roy,
I do have the latest version of DPP.
I do not have elements open and running at the same as DPP is running. I wonder if elements is keeping a program file open in ram after I close it that might be the conflict. I am using elements to download and catalog the files from the flash card. I then close elements and open DPP. I need to try and open DPP first after the computer boots up to see if this might be the problem. I will try this when I get home this evening.

Well, I opened DPP before running elements after a computer boot up but still no success. I am stuck on this one. It is like DPP does not like XTi jpg's.
Any more ideas anyone? | | | |

Howdy sbp,
I have re-installed the lastest version of DPP twice with no luck, same problem.
I have narrowed it down to some specifics. It seems that DPP and Photoshop Elements 5.0 do not play nice together though I do not know which is the offending party. Let me expalin.
I found that when I use Elements 5.0 to download and catalog the jpgs to a folder on the hard drive, DPP gets the error in question (DPPViewer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close....) when I open DPP and try and view the jpgs in the folder. But when I download the jpgs from the flash card directly to the hard drive using windows explorer, DPP can read the jpgs fine without causing the error.
Thus the conclusion that DPP and Elements 5.0 do not play nice together. I wish I could figure out specifically which is causing the issue and why.

I would contact support for Adobe and describe your problem. Since Elements 5.0 and the XTI are both fairly new, they may be unaware of the problem but be able to develop a fix.

I run Elements 5 and DPP 2.??. I experienced the same thing. This was my solution.
Go into the properties of DPP and select a different default location to start looking for your images. I have an external drive so I selected the root of the drive letter. Now, everytime I open DPP it goes to my root and I select the folder I want to open. By DEFAULT DPP and Elements 5 will open the last folder you were working on. Both programs are having a conflict with the last open folder. This is what is causing the system to generate the error.

Howdy K1000,
Thanks for your reply. I would always change the folder name and restart DPP when I recieved the error, therefore DPP would not open with the last folder. I did make the change you suggested (also have my pics on an external hard drive) with varying results. I have three folders with jpgs that were downloaded and cataloged with Elements. After the change I can open two of the forlders with DPP without the error but the third folder still gives me the error everytime I open it after starting DPP. It is the only folder that has both raw and jpg files.
Do you shoot raw and if so do you save both raw and jpgs together in the same folder?
Its a shame there is a conflict between the two. I am wondering if Adobe knows of the problem as Glen suggests contacting them.
Thanks for your help. | | | |

I do have several folders with .crw, .jpg, .tif and .psd files and both programs can edit the files with no problem.
Move the files you can't open to another folder and see if you access them.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 (20060914.r.77)

I moved the files to another folder as you suggested but still cannot open them. DPP still gives the error when trying to open the new folder.
I have the exact same versions as you.

I didn't see it mentioned, but did you check your file associations... meaning which program is set to open jpg, jpeg and/or JPG file types?
Also, in my experience... some programs will treat the same file differently, depending on the extension, even if all variations (jpg, jpeg, JPG) of an extension are to be opened/viewed by the same program.
So even if you started off with a .jpg that could be opened by a particular program, and maybe it was moved, copied or renamed with a .jpeg extension (using a different program), it might not be recognized by the original program after that.

I have the exact same versions as you. | I duplicated your error by opening a file on E5. Then I opened DPP and attempted to open the folder which has the open E5 file. DPP stopped on the open file and the error box appeared again.
DPP is hanging on the last file that it crashed with when E5 had the same file open.
Close E5.
Through Explorer, right-click one file you cannot open and select "Open With" search for DPP viewer. This will open the file. You can then see the folder on your left, open and see all the previously files open in DPP.
It worked for me.
I'm sorry I can't help you much more. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
