offsite system backup - 01-22-2007, 04:47 PM

Anyone use an internet-based backup for their files? I have XM radio and have been hearing ads for carbonite.com. It works in the background and backs up all folders and files that you want saved to an offsite location. There is no limit on how much data you can backup and the service is only $50/yr. They also have a free trial if you want to check it out first. Has anyone here ever used this company or is there another company that you are currently using that you really like? I'm thinking about getting some type of service like this for an offsite backup.

I have never heard of them. I remember a place called x-drive or something like that many years ago before some big named company bought them up.

I tried the x-drive but it was a total manual operation and a pain to deal with at first gen DSL service back in 98/99 or so.

whats their security like? i would be afraid of my data being hacked and made available to the public. Not that I have anything exciting on my PC that someone would want

do you want to backup pictures? or all types of files. you could look into getting some server space - many are offering 250gb or more for around $100 year.

smugmug and zenfolio - also have plans for photos that are very reasonable.

I am trying Carnonite right now. Very easy.. But I already see a problem for me...
It does not backup external or Network drives. Most all my data is on external USB drives. I'll tell them after my 15day trial is over why I am not subscribing.

I already use Smugmug but that only hold jpeg files. I'm looking for something that will store my RAW files also.

Web Space. - 01-23-2007, 04:40 PM

Just use someplace like http://1and1.com/ and FTP your data up daily. You can get 100 GB currently for $2.50 month for first 6 months and $4.99 thereafter. Less than $60.00 a year for 100 GB of storage. You can also use it for a web site and your own photo gallery at the same time. If you need more space 200 GB is only $5.00 month for first 6 months and $9.99 a month thereafter. I am not affiliated with them but have hosted my site and galleries there for almost 5 years and I am very satisfied.

I actually have several hosted sites with significant space. My problem...I don't want to have to keep track of all my changed files and such. HAving something that does that for you in the background would be very nice. I currently have well over 500GB of data that I would love to have off-site in addition to the internal network backups and DVD backups that I have.

The idea about a webhost is a good idea though for those that don't deal with a lot of changes and huge amounts of data. I am just glad that people are discussing off-site storage...It's essential to a completely thorough data recovery plan.

Thanks!

A backup program such as SyncBackSE can automate the nightly FTP process. This program will connect to your site via FTP, determine what changes have been made since the last backup, and backup the changes. It makes the process automatic and easy. I'd highly recommend going this route.
