That was actually going to be my comment. I really like the look of the bricks in the second photo, but like the look of the people in the first photo. I don't know if combining them would make it look good, but I think both on their own are really nice and different.

What you could do is keep a copy of the original as your top layer and use color as your blending mode. Then use a mask to add back the color in selected areas.

My rendition has a pretty heavy desaturated layer which is what has flushed the color out of the people. Maybe reducing the desat would help the color as well.

I'm glad to see that Stephen and I have a similar opinion. When I looked at his work I thought "hmm, high radius low sharpening to bring up local contrast and emphasize edges a bit, desaturation, and excellent use of lighting dependent on the look he's going for in each photo." I however hadn't heard the phrase hiraloam before, now I can put a word to a technique I've known of for a while! Obviously he IS good at photoshop though, as several of his images are reasonably complex composites.

Edit: of course, he might also employ someone to do his post work for him Then, his statements would be even more accurate!

Guys, I've had personal experience with Jeremy Cowart and Esther Havens and I talk to Ben De Rienzo on a regular basis, and the things they start off with is lighting, as Dave stated in his post before. Lighting and camera shot.

This shot was taken with natural light and almost no post work done at all. I remember seeing this shot on the camera and was dumbfounded cos it was pretty much what you see now.

so, never grow discouraged with your PS skills. experiment with your resources.
