A bit over the top for me (although i kinda like the ones that are more standard simple portraits), but I wouldn't mind seeing more of how the final images are achieved. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. WOW...absolutely amazing. Go to behind the scenes. You can see videos of his crazy lighting setups, and then it's obviously a lot of post work. Looks a lot like Jill Greenburg ( www.manipulator.com) but not to that extent. Wish I knew what he was doing. I sent him an email. I doubt he'll respond though.

it's definitely not one thing or another. yahoo david hill post processing and you'll come across a forum with a post about 8 pages long on this discussion. I didn't have time to read but a couple pages so I don't know if someone ever figures it out. I think it's a combo of crazy lighting techniques, lucis art: exposure setting, maybe a small touch of lucis art: sculpture, maybe a little dragonizer, HDR, some dodging and burning and some fill in raw. Definitely multiple layers. I doubt we'll ever know but this guys seriously kicks ass!

I recently also ran into the work of a photographer that has some awesome processing on her shots. Look especially at the Rodeo and ones of Horses. They are awesome. I (and several others have) asked but I don't think she is interested in discussing the process. I don't blame her, this is her business and for people like me is just a hobby.
Check out www.valentineslane.com. I would be interested in what you all think.
Thanks,

Dave Hill actually started posting on another forum I participate in. Everyone was trying to work out his post processing. He said it is pretty much all light.
What he actually said was "
Wow, I'm flattered by all this talk! I'm glad some of you like my work. I really can't share much about specifics, and I'm not a photoshop guru, but I am definitely down to discuss. I haven't used HDR or that tone-mapping stuff. I just recently heard about it, and it seems you need to bracket your images to do it well. That would be almost impossible when shooting humans! :-) In terms of cameras, depending on the budget, I use canon digitals and H1's; all prime lenses. Canons are SOOO fun and easy to shoot with, but the H1 files are crisp, edge to edge, and print bigger. Kinda a trade off. I'm a big fan of using lights, and I'd say the primary factor of how my images look is the lighting setup. Photoshop is of course crucial as well, but you gotta have a clean raw file to begin with. Too much processing can give you nasty digital grain, halos, all that stuff, which may look good on Flickr, but when printed on paper for a portfolio that an art director sees, looks like junk. I would totally suggest that new photogs spend less time on PS and more time shooting and playing with lights, and learning how to direct their subjects. As to the comment about $50k shoots... haha... that made me laugh. For sure my budgets have been getting bigger, but a lot of the stuff on my site paid peanuts. You really have to work your butt off; lots of sweat, set-building, hauling lights all over the place, day after day, for at least a few years etc. But that's part of the adventure, right!? Let me know if u guys have any more questions. Thanks!
"

Cool site. I like that he has behind the scenes stuff. It's a little much for me but I like it.
Here a shot from this weekend using 2 lights(580ex+sun)and Lucis.
I would like to know how to do it in camera.

Do what in camera? Make photos like that? You can't. What lucis set did you use? I prefer exposure and sculpture although some of the other ones for certain pics give really cool looks.

Mike the processing seems to be along the same lines there as well. The more I play with lucis art layers i could see how it was a combo of that and lighting. That's probably why Dave Hill says he's not doing anything crazy in PS...he's using a plugin. Who knows. His pictures rock though!

Seems like a cool style if you like shooting for advertising. I'd tend to believe that lighting plays an 80% role in the images because it will give you a workable dynamic range and reduce strong contrast which can then later be adjusted in PS. I would assume a good use of masking is necessary as well.
