yes please do. I think it would be best to apply the noise to the RAW file, but can't seem to be able to do it. | | | |

NN said they will have RAW support sometime this year. Or so they say.
If you know how to make an action you can have the NN applied within the action. Then run that action in batch mode on many pictures.

However, after finalizing and exporting/saving the raw file to TIF or JPEG, you can batch using the standalone version of NN. That's how I do it. If I have only a couple of images needing n/r, I do them in PS via the NN plug-in.

I tweak the RAW files in ACR then save them to TIF or JPG files.
I have an action that runs NN on the files (batch mode) but to be honest, sometimes I have better luck processing them one at a time. It depends on the image.

I use NN a lot (shooting at ISO3200 will do that) but I would never want to just batch a group of shots. I find NN works best when you profile the noise for each image. I never use it on a jpg but only in PS (CS2) at a full 16bits and PhotoPro color space. It's also the first thing I do to image when it comes out of ACR into photoshop.
And I have all noise reduction and sharpening off in ACR. I'm using ACR less and less and just for WB and a adjusting clipping.

I agree John... batching is real coarse even if NN is set up with the camera profile (mine is set up to read the EXIF and apply a profile based on that). But, when I am trying to blast out a few hundred sports images, I'll batch them.
Otherwise I use the method that you gave in your post above this one

Well... I had a hard time making myself do it but essentially this is what I do:
I always shoot RAW so initial processing in ACR is a must. Shooting RAW has saved more than a few images so if you aren't shooting RAW format at least give it a whirl.
I open the images in Bridge. I do a quick preview and use the little stars and assign the images that I know that I want to keep 5 stars. I turn on filtering to show only 5 stars when I'm done with the preliminary work. Then I select Tools then Batch Rename. This is where I take the time to back up my RAW files. There's a lot of naming flexability with Batch Rename. Make sure the Copy to Folder radio button is selected. Browse to the folder where the processed images are going to be stored and when the naming is finished select Rename. When thats done, change the folder that you are viewing to the one where you copied and renamed your RAW files to and open that in Bridge. Turn off filtering. Now you can work on a copy of the RAW files and not worry about hosing anything up PLUS of you put them on a different drive you have some protection against drive failure. I select all and then right click, open in Camera RAW. Sometimes I open 100 - 150 at a time but I have 4 Gb of RAM and a very large HD. Depending on what I shot I'll select the first image and set WB, exposure, and whatever else for the first image. Then I'll select the little arrow to the right of settings (just under the histogram) and select Save New Camera Raw defaults. That will apply the settings that I just made to the rest of the images. BTW- None of the Auto checkboxes are ever checked. WB is usually on Auto but it might not stay there. Now the fun begins. One by one I'll go thru and tweak settings. The more that you get right in ACR the better off you are later. A lot of times there is nothing to do because the lighting, though often poor, is usually consistent and the adjustments that I made to the first one work pretty well for the rest. Once they are all tweaked I'll select all and Save. I append a _P to filename so that I know that it's been processed in ACR. Select a folder to save to. For sports I use max quality JPG. That was hard for me to get used to. For the longest time I processed TIF files but those are 90Mb files and batching them would take hours and hours and hours. Anyway... all sports images go from RAW to JPG in this step.
Once that runs it's time to shut Bridge down and open CS2.
I use NN Pro and I have their camera profiles for my camera. I use an action in CS 2 to apply NN to the image. I have a couple of different actions. One for Low ISO and one for High ISO. Roughly it works like this (I batch everything with one of these actions. With batch you can set where the newly processed files are saved as well as put a "marker" in the filename to tell you that it's been run through the mill. I use _N for noise. The last step is to crop the images that you get from this process. That's tedious but pretty easy to do once the processing work is over. I have a Save as JPG action that makes that simple too but I don't run it in batch mode. ):
NN
Set File Info (this is where I attach my copywrite info to the image)
Purge (clear the cache. No turning back but it speeds things up)
Select Actual Pixels
Fred Miranda Sharpening plug-in for the 1DsMkii
Flatten (ballsy move but I still have the RAW file if FM hoses it up. Rarely happens if ever)
Save (I have a folder that the action saves to and then I move the files out when it's done)
Purge
Close
High ISO and Low ISO are the same except for the FM Sharpening plug-in settings.
If you haven't learned how to record your own actions I highly recommending taking the time to do so.
