Request for some help aligning photo's - 03-14-2007, 01:18 PM

I would like to accurately align the rows and columns of these photo's so I can print these large posters (30x40) for the school. I've tried adjusting the grid variables but not been as as successful as I would like. I started with each photo 8x10. I then reduced the photo in both axis by 35%. However the left & right edge of the photo doesn't align to the grid, and I would like an equal spacing between each photo, and in between each row.

Anyone have any suggestions on a way to accomplish this?

Thanks alot.
Randy

Attched below are small web-view-versions of what I'm trying to do.

it is all in the allighment boxes on the top tool bar in photoshop

select the arrow (selection tool) and select the layers you want to space evenly, such as a row across.

just give me a call, 512.567.0336 it will take a while to type out

Tyler -

I'm at work so I'll give it try when I get back to my hotel this evening. If I can't figure it out I'll give you a call .... thanks for steering me in that direction .... I've placed things equidistantly apart using the array command in Autocad, so was looking for something useful like that. But like I said, I'll give it try and see if I can figure it out.

this should get all the images for a row set up for you. just be sure your far left and right images are where they need to be. after you do this for each row you may find it easiest to merge each row together then select all the rows and distribute them evenly making sure your top and bottom rows are where they need to be

hope this helps, i do this sort of thing all the time

Hi Randy,

In addition to what Tyler said, you also have guides that you can drag from the rulers onto the image to help get things lined up. Those, along with the alignment tools help you nail things exactly where you want them:) In my CS this is in "Edit | Preferences | Guides, Grid & Slices" You can also use the Grid. You turn these on with the "View | Show | Grid" or "View | Show | Guides" I have not used slices but they are used for website creation if I'm not mistaken. Note: To move the guides you need to use the Move tool. You can drag the guides to the image using other tools, but you can only move it with the move tool or holding the CTRL key down (which changes the tool temporarily into Move) HTH:)

Best regards,

Tyler and Arnor -

Thanks for the info guys ... this worked for me. I used the distribute command to do this, didn't quite see what the "align" function did, but the distribute "function" performed what I wanted to do. At least I'm in the ball-park, so I know where I need to look up and study some more information now that I'm a "little" familiar with what I'm looking for and want to do.

Appreciate you sharing the info and help. The montage looks better already after applying a bevel and drop shadow on the pics, and aligning the top edges .... sweeeet !!!

Now the next level to figure out ... where to get a 30x40 printed and mounted at a reasonable price. I see ElcoColor can do a 30x40 for $43.50, and foam core mount for another $18.50, that's within my target, but still want to look around a little more. I've got two of these to get printed for the middle school band and high school marching band.

later.

Randy

With the align you can link layers togethe and align them. It takes a little practice to get it right but once you've got used to it, it can make things really easy to align multiple layers to a single layer. For example if you want to center text over a layer that is offset from the background, then you can link those layers and center them. My problem was to figure out which layer was the one that was being used as the source coordinates.

Arnor,

I was actually playing around with linking the layers before I read your link, and was having some difficulty using the "align" functions to position the rows ... not sure if I have it yet or not but no biggie, I learn best by "doin" provided I'm steered in a decent direction and I'm not stressed for time.

Thanks again.
Randy

Same here! I haven't mastered the align, but I have used it and every time I have to practice a few times before I get it right<g> It's one of those things that you don't need very often (unless you are doing graphics, not photos) but when you need them, you _really_ need them<g>
