Nic, one way to do it is to take mutiple shots from a tripod as they are running towards each other and one final shot as they are hugging in the middle. Stack each shot as a layer. Add a black mask to each image in the stack except the background which is a picture of the scene without the couple in it. Paint the mask white to reveal the man and woman on each shot. Drop the opacity on each layer except the final shot of them hugging.

I just kept on layering the photos and erasing the behind layers to get this. The only difference would be to drop the opacity in the certain layers that you wanted to.
a couple of pointers would be to make sure you are on a tripod, and also turn your auto-focus off so it doesnt adjust and change the composition by a hair.

And in addition to the tripod, using a remote would probably help too to make sure you don't move the camera.
Does anyone have a spare $2000 laying around that they could loan me so I can go to one of those one-on-one shooting sessions with them? Anyone? :D

couldn't you also do a shutter drag of a few seconds and make them hold the final pose?

If you do a timed exposure with multiple flash firings at a reduced power to get the ghosting, then fire the flash at a higher power setting to properly expose the final pose of the setting, you will achieve your goal of an image like the one in the blog that you asked about.

It might take you a couple tries to get it like you want it, but a couple of times is no biggie. Then again... who shoots film these days?
