Better results using DPP? - 04-30-2007, 07:58 PM

Is it overly normal for colors to come out cleaner when shooting RAW and using DPP? I didnt think it would make that much of a difference, but everything contains less artifacting when boosting saturation levels versus using CS2.

Even at ISO 200 on the 1D there is some noticeable noise when levels are corrected

I have heard the same thing via a Canon rep. They highly recommended it for use with ultra large prints too... Supposedly, it interprets the RAW files the way they were intended and does make a difference (according to the Canon Rep).

As opposed to shooting JPG or using a different RAW converter?

I get the same results when shooting RAW and using Nikon Capture NX vs CS2. I heard someone say something the Camera software doing a better job with the RAW info than a 3rd party program.....or something like that

I, too, have heard the same thing: that DPP interprets the raw data more accurately than 3rd party programs.

That's a nice shot by the way.

I've done some side by side comparisons and I definitely think DPP does a better job than ACR. However, its not by leaps and bounds and most of the time I still use ACR. I use DPP if it really needs tweaking or I'm going to be printing larger than 11x14 or so.

Yeah.. I believe that is exactly what the rep said... Use it for sure if printing large prints...otherwise, the benefit is very minimal.

I've seen marked improvement when I use DPP to create my TIFF files. The interface is simpler and the results are always better. In fact, I had a couple of STFC images that CS2 (nor CS3) would read correctly. They were fine in DPP. I've also revisted some older images and seen improvement in those as well. I don't know or care why it works better, but it works better.

Detail, sharpness and color is better for me with DPP than camera Raw from Adobe, only wish they have highlight preview and recovery feature. I happened to use it the very first time when i got my m2n and DPP was the only Raw convector that capable to read the raw file, i've been using it since then.

So what would be better DPP 3 or Capture One with 30D profile?

DPP (Digital Photo Professional) is Canon's raw image processor.

It SHOULD have come with your camera. If not, you can download it from Canon's website.

My images seem sharper, colors are better, and bokeh is smoother when shooting raw and using DPP. I am using raw from now on.

The only problem - what program can I use to insert cutlines into file info without resaving through photoshop and degrading quality?
