Malcolm, I use (and like the results of) Noise Ninja ( http://www.picturecode.com/). You can get stand alone or plug-in versions. The home edition is for 8-bit images, the pro version is for 16 bit versions.

Use a Neat Image plug-in. A google search will pull up plenty of reviews.

I use NN (noise ninja) because I have it. I would entertain using other programs that have different features. NN works great, is very easy and intuitive.

I'll second Noise Ninja. I mainly use the Photoshop plug-in (16-bit). You can download and try it before you buy it from their site. There are plenty of reviews to be found as well.

16bit version of Noise Ninja. It works just like another CS2 filter plug-in.

Another NN (16-bit) user here. I don't use it that much, but when I do, it works very well.

You can see 16bit Noise Ninja at work in these portfolios. All shot at either 3200 with a 5D or 1600 with an R-D1 and some under shall we say extreme conditions. Dublin Nights

I use noise ninja but, it seems any noise removal software is going to soften your image. The minute you try and compensate and sharpen for the softness the noise comes back. To me that is the only drawback. There are a lot of things you can tweak in software so, maybe I am missing something. The noise is better but my images are always softened to a degree.

I use both Noise Ninja and Noiseware Pro. Both are great programs. Both do the same thing just a little differently. Download both of them and see which works best for you. Noise ninja has an education discount.. My .02 worth.

I have both Noise Ninja and Noiseware Pro. Frequently they both do about as well as the other; there are images that each works better on. I like the Noiseware interface better, and so I tend to use it most of the time, just using Noise Ninja when I'm not fully satisfied with the results from Noiseware.
