Nikon-D-70 NEF File Issue - 05-03-2007, 03:08 PM

Last weekend I shot our company's Golf Tourney and our Annual Crawfish Boil. I had a couple of other employees helping with the shooting. Here is my problem...

I own and use the Nikon D1x, the 2 others people helping me with the shoot were shooting with the owners D-70's. I always shoot RAW, so when I set the cameras (D-70's) I set them to shoot RAW. This would give me a little help in the editing. Since my D1x does not offer to shoot in RAW with JPG I set them both on the "RAW" setting.

When I try to open them up in Photoshop CS2 the format is not recognized. When I put the Flash Card into the D1x is shows to not have any images. Return the card to the D-70 it shows the previews of images through camera.
What do I need to do to get these to read on my PC/Photoshop CS2?

I'm sure my job will not be on the line if I can't get these but my boss has spent many thousands of dollars to host the Crawfish Boil & Golf Tournament and would consider it a let down if not captured for files and advertisement.

Please help......

It's possible your version of CS2 was purchased before Adobe added D70 raw file conversion. Go to the Adobe website and download all the new raw file converters. I had to do this when I bought my first D70 and again when I bought a D200. Other than that I can't help you. I have a couple of D70's and shoot Raw all the time.

BTW you can't look at files created in one camera in another. It will always say no images in folder. I can't even view files from one D70 on the other D70.

I downloaded the update and it works fine.... thanks very much...

I think Don is right, you probably just need a new version of the RAW conversion.

Other alternatives: both Picasa and Faststone are free apps that will read d70 RAW files "out of the box." But, if I was you I would download the 30 day trial of Adobe's lightroom. I just used it for my first big shoot and I'm hooked.

Are you using CS2 or ACR? If CS2, it will not open RAW/NEF files. If ACR, then do what was already suggested and download the update for RAW

Not sure what you mean by that--If I try to open a RAW file via CS2, it opens ACR automatically, and then allows you to make adjustments and use CS2 to edit. Same when you double click on the raw file (that is if you have CS2 assigned to open NEF files and not Capture or NX, or unless you've installed capture and not removed that pesky file from the correct CS2 directory).

Am I missing something?
