Raw Images in photoshop - 05-08-2007, 11:30 PM

I shoot with a canon 20D and until recently I have always shot in Raw+Jpeg. I switched to Raw for a photo session and when I went to pull it up on Photoshop CS it didn't open. I tried the browse window and It didn't even show them. Using the open command to open the images a dialog box comes up and reads, "could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I really do not want to lose the images, any ideas on what is going on and how to fix it??? Thanks.

Do you have Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) installed?

That is the module which actually processses the raw files.

Questions like this need to be put in the 'Post Processing' forum for a faster response.

In addition to what johnastovall said, check out the Digital Photo Professional that came on the CD with your Canon. It can view/process raw files and then transfer them to PS if you like. You can download the latest from Canon.

Is there a Camera Raw plugin for CS that supports the 30D?

CS cuts off with the 20D. Here's the list.... But you can upgrade CS to CS3.

Or, you can use CS by converting the 30D RAW files to DNG using the latest converter.

DPP does a better job and it's a simpler interface IMHO. I like ACR but have moved to DPP.

Unless you need to have separate jpgs immediately after a shoot, I don't see why one needs to shoot RAW + jpg. You can easily extract the jpg from the RAW file with PS after the shoot.

iCe,

How does DPP and PS work together? If I have Raw files, open them with DPP and then what? I am new to using Raw files.

Thanks,

Mike

CS2 supports 30D RAW files. Might find the upgrade cheaper than CS3 ?

Mike,

Do your raw editing in DPP, then hit Alt-P (in Windows) and it opens the image in Photoshop with the RAW editing that you did in DPP applied. For color management check out the "Tools|Preferences|Color Management" in DPP to set the color space that you want to use. I have PS set to "Preserve Embedded Profile" for RGB so it will use whatever comes from DPP. I have mine set up for Adobe RGB since that's what I use for shooting. I also set the monitor and printing profile to my monitor calibration profile and printer paper profile that I use most of the time. HTH:)

Best regards,

+1 though for the type of shooting that I do I save as a TIF in DPP and then open that in CS2

This whole discussion as stated would be better suited for post processing as it would get more help and be more accessible to people new to RAW files. The simple matter here here is RAW converter preference. You dont have to use Photoshop or its plugins to convert RAW files. You use a "RAW Converter".

There are several on the market. I prefer Pixmantec Rawshooter, but thats simply my preference. The boiled down version is this. The RAW Converter allows you to make your post processing adjustments. Once adjusted to your liking it converted to a file format (I prefer 16 bit .tif's) that can then be accessed by Photoshop. Its a file conversion simple as that.
