Orton Effect (Lots o' big pics!) - 05-19-2007, 05:29 AM

I came across some processing called the Orton effect, but I can't remember if it was from this site or another. I thought there would be plenty of people on this board that enjoy the flower and/or landscape photography that might be interested. Below are some of my attempts to see the effects.

Thanks for sharing. I can see how it could be quite effective on some images. Very cool indeed. Here's my 5 minute attempt.

I have seen this before. It is a very cool effect. Adam, I really like how the last one turned out. Debbi, the tree and bluebonnets is awesome.

I combined a standard image with an Orton image like the author described at the end.

Nice - simple to do yet profound results.
I tried it on a few "scrap' shots of mine:

I played around with this some more and figured out a mod that will make it a touch more dreamy.

After making the Gaussian blur layer set to multiply, duplicate that layer and set the new copy to "Pin Light" or "Soft Light", this will add a bit more ethereal/dreaminess to it, and can be toned down by using the opacity.

Here's an example -first with the 'normal' orton, then adding a pinlight layer:

I like to add texture after the process is done. Prints great on matt paper.

Interesting. I've seen that link before but never tried the technique until now.

This is the Old kinkler Cemetery located on Lavaca County Rd 240 between Schulenberg and Hallettsville. On the far left side of the photo is a cedar street leaning to the left. Under it, is a headstone leaning to the right. It belongs to my great-great grandfather and grandmother. He was buried there in 1901 and she was buried there in 1906.

If you like the effect, practice making it a few times and then make it into an action. It does'nt work for all photos.

This is true. I tried it on several different photos and it appears to work on photos that are light in color rather than dark.

True 'dat. Steelsun mentioned earlier in the thread that Soft Light and/or Pin Light works well, too. Those two options work well for the darker pictures. I ended up making two different actions to incorporate the different techniques.

The original picture below (taken by a friend of mine) was lacking in color and detail due to the sun being behind the tree. The Orton effect helped a lot on this pic, although I did have to keep the sky separate and only apply the effect to the rest of the pic. It was done using 'Soft Light' instead of 'Multiply'.
