Hmmmm.... I must be cheap. I use Windows Movie Maker (included with XP SP2) and burn the DVD using Sonic's My DVD ($60). Always been satisfied, but then again maybe I'm not too demanding.

There is not a version Proshow Gold or Producer for the Mac. Although I run Parallels and Win XP Pro & Vista Ultimate on my Mac Book. Then Proshow Gold and Producer will play the uploaded videos.

It's overkill, but I used Pinnacle Studio 9.x to do my slide shows on DVD. It's more for video than still shots, but I found some success with it. Cannot recommend the recent incarnations as they are processor and memory hogs and work about 1/3rd of the time.

I have Pinnacle Liquid and it is nice and flexible but expensive.
I also have Pinnacle Studio, having worked with V7, 8, 9, and 10. Some issues, but I am fussy. It is also affordable. It looks like Studio and Liquid may eventually merge...it would be a great product together as one if they can keep the finished product in the Studio price range.

I also have had Roxio up to V7, since before it was Roxio. It is nice and while not as flexible, is user friendly and affordable.

I also have Auto Muvee Producer, in various versions up to 4.1 on my primary system and my 2nd has a higher version. You trade off flexibility, but you gain a high ease of use and great themes already built and ready to apply to a stack of images. Just add music and you are cookin with gas! I shot stills at a 5pm meeting, and had a burned DVD presentation of 5 minutes in length by 6:30pm using Muvee to produce the file and Roxio to burn the DVD.

They all eat CPU, memory, and disc. Given time, they will eat your wallet, too. But actually, I use them all depending on my mood and time constraints.
