White Balance Oops! - 05-30-2007, 01:31 PM

This past weekend, during all the rain, I was staying at a small farm I have. I was closed up in the house with the grandkids and was taking some photos under tungsten lighting. I had my white balance set for the tungsten lights.

After the rain stopped, I walked down to an area where a small pond is loacted and took some photos of the over flow where it ran into my neighbors. I forgot to reset the white balance. What a mess!

Photoshop to the rescue! I'll try not to make that mistake again!

And what a difference. Nice save. I've done that a few times, use the wrong WB.

Good job saving the image. I made the same mistake. Once. I've shot RAW every since then.

Shoot RAW and not worry about white balance!!

Leave it on Auto and do any tweaks in post.

One thought on that - I've found it's far easier, if I'm shooting in pretty similar light, to set a custom white balance, even if it's absolutely off, than it is to use AWB. That way, when I need to make an adjustment to the WB, I make one adjustment to all images. I've found AWB differs just slightly between each image, requiring custom changes for each RAW file shot in the same light.

Are you shooting Jpeg? if so you are probably correct, however if you shoot RAW, unless your light source is changing dramatically, the difference can be easily corrected in Bridge or Bibble or a program such as those.

Ahh yeah, I get what ya mean - you can record an action in PS/ACR to set to a specific WB kelvin point, rather than a relative change from a given point. The problem I had was manually adjusting them, they all required slightly different changes from before.

So yeah, my point is, apparently, moot =)
