DPP Raw - 06-02-2007, 12:23 AM

Hi all,

I'm using the latest version (as of couple of weeks ago) of Digital Photo Professional (from Canon). I like using it because it's fast and simple to use.

I have one problem that I don't quite understand if it's something I'm missing or if it's a problem with the software.

When I view the thumbnail view the photos look right, the colors and contrast looks right. In the quick view they also look right. When I load them into the raw processor window (double click on thumbnail or use Ctrl-O) the image looks washed out. Low contrast and just plain washed out. Take that photo into Photoshop stright from the Raw processor and it looks fine in Photoshop.

I've set the color management and the colors look fine everywhere except in the RAW window. It applies to both RAW and JPEGs - they both look washed out. If I processe them for contrast they look way too contrasty when I take them into PS, so I don't<g>

Here are screenshots taken from the various windows.

This is the DPP quick view window:
Name: DPP Quick Check.jpg
Views: 18
Size: 29.0 KB

This is Photoshop:
Name: Photoshop1.jpg
Views: 17
Size: 41.0 KB

And finally the raw window in DPP:
Name: DPP RAW.jpg
Views: 17
Size: 44.0 KB

The Quick view and Photoshop look very similar, but the RAW looks pale, gray and dull.

I have tried just about any and every setting in the program that I can find. Anyone have any ideas what I could try?

Best regards,

BTW: The photo in Photoshop is the photo you see in the raw window. NO processing was done on it, just opened in the raw window and immediately moved to PS. So this is exactly the same photo, unprocessed viewed in 3 places.

Go to ..Tools, Preferences and open Color management. What are your settings there?
I have Default settings of Work Color Space with sRGB checked.
Color matching settings for display sRGB.
Printing Profile none.
CMYK simulation profile is none.

I tried changing the CMYK simulation profile and got that washed out look your talking about. Check that setting first and put it to --none-- and see if that helps.

Hi Roy,

It was the CMYK! It was set to US Web Coated. Set it to None and the colors came back:) Thank you:):)

I have the RGB set to Adobe RGB since that's the color space I shoot in and I don't see any visual difference if I switch it to sRGB - at least not for that photo. So now I have this set up as follows and it looks good:

Name: DPPCM.jpg
Views: 16
Size: 66.8 KB
