Adobe Bridge is altering my RAW .NEF Files - 06-07-2007, 01:14 AM

OMFG!!! I am about to pull my hair out!

Adobe Bridge (CS3) is auto adjusting my Nikon NEF files. Has anyone had this problem? I shoot with a D70 and a D200. I prefer Bridge over Lightroom because of the difference of speed in post-processing.

I don't want Bridge auto adjusting anything. I've got my cameras configured the way I like it.
Here's an example of what it's doing.
Notice the difference between the Windows Raw Viewer and Adobe Bridge?

please. Please. PLEASE! Someone help me!

Just curious... why do you think Windows Raw viewer is not the problem? I've never known Bridge to auto anything...

IF I am not mistaken, the MS RAW viewer is just showing the embedded JPG within the RAW file (preview jpg). This will take on the settings in camera...The RAW file in Bridge is RAW and typically flatter than the embedded (or not) JPGs...

Bridge builds its preview from the actual RAW data. It cannot see he flag such as sharpness, contrast, color and such.

MS Photo viewer is not actually looking at the RAW data. It is just showing you the embedded JPG just like Andrew mentioned.

I have noticed this as well. It seems that Bridge is applying some form of RAW conversion on the image previews. Once you open the image in ACR, you can remove any of the automatically applied settings.

I am just not sure how to prevent them from applying to the preview in Bridge...

Step 1: Remove lens cap...

Bridge initially shows the embedded JPEG, until it can get it's own preview built from the RAW using ACR. Make sure that in the Camera Raw Preferences "Apply auto tone adjustments" is not checked.

Bridge defaults to automate a few things on Raw files. This maybe not what you want, and I know there's a setting in reference that tells Bridge not to touch your Raw files when opening it up....kinda forgot where it was when i switched to LR. I'll post when I find out.

Everyone! Thanks for the input. I was expecting Bridge to render the NEF files as I see them on the D200 and D70. I'm learning that I will have to adjust sharpness, contrast, and saturation and then save those settings in ACR.

I would also like to note that I have not installed any of Nikon's software.

FYI - what you are seeing on the LCD of the D70/200/any other camera is the embedded JPG preview file, not the actual RAW image. This is also what Windows is showing you.

Have you turned off auto ajust?

Goto:
Edit
Camera Raw preferences
default Image settings
uncheck apply auto tone adjustments.
Close bridge

Open Bridge again
open a raw image
set the following
Exposure 0
Shadows 0
Brightness: I set to 30.
Contrast 0
Saturation 0
click on the small triangle under the histogram
save new camera raw defaults
click done
close bridge
this should give you the best unajusted raw image
if you have several diffrent types of raw files
the raw defaults must be set for each.
