Layer Mask and Adjustment Layers Video Tutorial - 06-13-2007, 03:22 PM

Howdy folks,

I just completed a comprehensive layer mask and adjustment layer video tutorial. It's a great introduction for those wishing to know how to use these tools but even those who are familiar with them might discover some new tricks. I know I did. :-)

The tutorial is broken into four lessons for easy "digestion" and you can stream or download each one. Just remember that each lesson builds on the last so it's best to start from the beginning if you're not familiar with the tools. Oh, and did I mention it's free?

Here's the address if you're interested:

I hope you all find it useful. Comments and constructive criticisms are welcomed. I'm also looking for suggestions for future video topics so let me know if there's something you'd like to know more about.

just watched all four. I need to do more of this. I always just duplicate layers and use the eraser tool a lot. The only time I use layer mask is combing or blending 2 or 3 pics together to make a collage with gradient tool. the info with the dog and the 50% opacity and getting a more realistic image was very useful..... plus part 4 with the info on how to do multiple gradient fills......... great tutorial. Unfortunately I have a homer simpson thick skull and will have to practice it many times to get it down and rembemer what I am doing..........thanks again. very nice of you to do this.

Andy, I would like to make a donation as a Thank You for the great videos you have provided, but I don't use PayPal. Can you send me a PO box or somewhere I can send you a check? I watched your Old Together video quite some time ago and meant to make a donation then...but got sidetracked.

I just watched the four adjustment layer videos. They are great! I have been using adjustment layers for quite a while but I still learned some great shortcuts (filling with black automatically - way cool!) and some things not even related to adjustment layers.

I love the alt drag to copy the mask. It's so simple I can't believe I didn't know it. That will save me a ton of time. And the ability to see the mask larger and be able to paint on it...Wow.

Great stuff.

The only thing I would mention for future videos is to consider showing where you started versus where you were at the end - as you did in the Old Together video. I really missed seeing the "before and after" views on the Adjustment Layer video tutorials two and three.

Thanks again,

---------------------------
Regards,
Patti

Andy, I would like to know more about using the Curves adjustment. I usually use Levels and Brightness/Contrast. I've tried applying the S curve that I've read about and that seems to work fairly okay, but I never quite know where to stop/start, etc. It's a lot easier to just drag the sliders in Levels - a cruder adjustment probably, but easier.

So, if others are interested, that's my vote for future tutorials.

Thanks,

Patti

Props, props, and more props! I just watched all four videos and found them to be an excellent teaching tool! I would recommend these to anyone who needed a better understanding (or an understanding at all) to Layer Masks.

Thanks for putting these together and using your time to better those around you! It takes a special person to take the time and put forth the effort you did in putting these tutorials together!

Once again, thank you... job well done... excellent series!
