Graphics Card - 06-30-2007, 09:54 AM

I need a recommendation for a graphics card for a Dell 24" WS. I assume that this will be a requirement since I am currently using an old Sony Triniton. My OS is a Dell Dimension 8300 w/Windows XP. Current card is a 64MB GeForce4 MX. Thanks for your help. This is an area[one of many] that I have obsolutely no knowledge.

If your current video card supports the native resolutinon of the Dell 24" WS monitor then no, you don't need a new video card.

To figure out what it supports you can (windows) right-click your computer screen and select properties, settings. That should give you your current display properties. Next click on Advanced, Adapter and at the bottom left of that tab, List all Modes..., If the native resolution of the Monitor (Dell 24" WS) shows in the list, then you should be okay unless the new monitor requires a DVI connection and you only have an analog connection available.

If you do need a new videocard, it's important to know what bus and speed your video card is on, ie., PCI, AGP 1x, 4x, 8x, PCI express before you start looking at new video cards.

Make sure the new card will work in your computer. I was going to get the 24" last year and buy a new card for it. But the card I needed was the newer PCI express card. http://tech.yahoo.com/gd/upgrading-y...cs-card/166360

Well if his current card is 64MB GeForce4 MX, then he is going to need a AGP card.

That model is supposed to have an AGP interface. Assuming you're not going to be playing high-powered 3d games (it will play games, just not with everything turned up), something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814170092
should be sufficient. It's a two-generation jump over your 4000-series.

But before you spend anything make sure that what you have isn't working for you. The 4000 series was pretty capable, even the pipeline-crippled MX's didn't do badly in the 2d resolution department.
