2 images one as a background - 07-06-2007, 11:12 PM

Ok I have a pic of dh in uniform that I would like to place a flag behind him as the background instead of the wall. How would I do that? Would that be like the merging images thread here?
I know how to use the filters to get a different color and texture background but not sure how to use another pic to get it.
TIA

You'll have to erase some of the picture of him to get the flag to show through. You can do this by selecting the background (with the pen, Lasso tools, or Magic Wand), by erasing the background with the Eraser, or by creating a layer mask and painting it with the Brush. I highly recommend the latter techinque, as it is nondestructive - if you make a mistake erasing, you can just switch your active swatch colour from black to white and "un-erase" the layer back in.

The layer mask is a greyscale map that tells Photoshop what part of the layer should be transparent. Anything white on the mask is opaque; anything black is transparent, and grey is everything in between.

Hey Huck that is a nice image.
I have a flag one that looks very similar now I can't find it lol, I saved it in PSD and I didn't label (dumby)
I am just having a hard time figuring out what exactly Daniel is saying now lol. Do I make an adjustment layer or just a layer? and I am using PSE, so i am sure that effects it.
IF I get it to work I will post it lol. But it will be tomorrow atleast

Ah, Elements doesn't have layer masks. But you can simulate the layer mask - do a search for "elements layer mask" and you'll see how.

I used PSE 4.0 to make that. All I did was I took a photo of a flag and just blew it up. Then I took my other photo and cut the object and pasted onto the new layer.

Hope that helps,.

I just merged them all together and it did that for me. I have several photos that I have done that with. None of them look as if they were cut and paste, but maybe thats just cause I am looking at it..LOL
