HELP! w/ Photo Size - 07-07-2007, 11:11 PM

Hey guys I have a question is this picture suitable for a 5x7 print ?

The reason I ask is it is set to 500x700 at 300 for resolution according to mpix at here under tips for great images then under recommended file sizes this image should work.

However when I look at the print size in photo shop the image says it is going to print a 1.5x2.3 inch image. If I change it to 5x7 it drops the resolution to 100 if I turn on resampling it is making the image 2100x1400.

I have a client that ordered a CD of the digital Negatives ....in the contract it states that the images will be suitable for printing 5x7's. I want to make sure I am living up to that with out giving her photos that she can print 16x20's from

The picture you posted is 467x700 pixels, and will not print as a 5x7 at 300 pixels per inch.

To print a 5x7 at 300 dpi, the image would have to be 1500x2100 pixels.

CS2/3?

If so what are your crop tool settings?

CS2.

As far as I know, Matt is trying to figure out the minimum size required to print adequate images at 5x7, since he is giving his client pictures on CD.

Daniel is right I am just trying to figure out the minimum size. I know the aspect ratio is currently not correct the picture I posted was still in a 4x6 aspect ratio.

I am just looking for the minimum size I can get away with

Most of what I have read recently indicate that 150 dpi gives a nice print out of an inkjet printer. That would make a 5x7 equal to 750 x 1050 at 150dpi.

First, the pixels of the 20D (2336x3504) are not ratio'd the same as a 5 x 7.
7/5=1.4
3504/2366=1.5

I bring my raw files into CS2 at 240 dpi. which makes for a 9.7 x 14.6 @ 240 dpi.
If I crop to 5x7(ratio) using the crop tool preset in ACR I have an image (doesn't show as 5 x 7 inches yet) @ 240dpi when opened in CS2
After opening in CS2, resample using biCubic (not bicubic smoother) Enter resolution at 150 dpi, set height to 5 and length should jump to 7. Pixel dimensions are not 750 x 1050 and if you turn the rulers on in CS2 and select print size you will see that you indeed have a 5x7.

Hope I didn't make that too confusing.

This also does not address what happens when printing. So I would adjust one and print it to see what you get.

Ken

I had not used the crop tool in ACR until just the other day. Don't remember which tutorial I was working with but it was in regard to Lightroom.

Cropping in ACR is non-destructive. Let me say that again. Cropping in ACR is non-Destructive. When you pass the raw file into photoshop to work on it you will only see the portion you cropped, but the RAW file will still contain the crop mask. It will not dump the excess data.

This allows you to open all your files at once in ACR and batch process the CROP ratio, then batch process an action to resample and save as a jpeg at 5x7 inches.

Hi Matt,

If you are going to print at 300dpi on 5x7 with no borders, then your image needs to be 5x300 x 7x300 pixels, i.e. 1500x2100 pixels. According to my information if you are printing on an Epson printer you should use 360dpi but 300dpi with others. Usually multiplications or divisions thereof work well too, such as 180 or 150, 90 or 75 etc. In PS, you can just set the crop to whatever size you want in whatever resolution and crop away. I set mine to use bicubic sharper for Image Interpolation as well as if I resize the image that is what I use. It makes upsampling pretty good.

Best regards,
