Copyright Brush and EXIF info mod - 07-30-2007, 05:14 PM

I just typed all this junk in an email to a friend. I figured it might come in handy here so I am cutting and pasting it here. Have fun... This is all somewhat paraphrased from The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers. Somewhat...

How to make a copyright brush

Open a new document. File >> New
At the bottom of the layers palette click on the new layer icon. It's next to the trash can.
Press Shift - U until you get to the custom shape tool to come up (looks like an amoeba on the menu bar)
On the options bar, there are three icons. Click the third one from the left. If you mouse over it, it says Fill pixels
Hit Enter Pick the copyright symbol.
Hit D to set the foreground to black
Make sure you are on the new layer and add the copyright symbol to the image by clicking on the symbol and then holding the left mouse button down as you drag the cursor across the screen. Try to be symmetrical.
Press T to switch to the Type Tool
Select your Font and Style (I use Bickham Script Pro and Semibold)
Select a text area and type whatever you want it to say: Firstname Initial Lastname 2007... or whatever. Don't worry about location. You can move it with the move tool.
Line it all up. Make it pretty.
Press M to get the Rectangular Marquee tool. Drag a selection around everything.
Then click Edit --> Define Brush Preset
When the Brush Name dialog appears give your brush a name and click ok. This adds your brush to the Presets library as a custom brush.
Hit B and then open the brush picker. Your new brush is at the very bottom. The icon looks scrunched but the brush isn't.

How to modify the exif. If you do these steps when the action recorder is running you will create an action and this becomes a one click operation. You can even batch process all of your images and save the copyright info to them with a couple of clicks.

The actions palette should be visible on next to the history palette. If not click on Window and check Actions.
Open an image.
Click File --> File Info
Under Description, fill in your data.
Author: Firstname Intial Lastname
Author Title: Photographer
Use the Copyright drop down and select Copyrighted.
In the Notice box, hold the ALT key down and hit the numbers 0 1 6 9 on the numeric keypad (numlock is on). That will put the © into the box. Now just hit space and type some thing like this in the box:

© 2007 Firstname Intial Lastname All Rights Reserved

I also put a dash followed by my cell phone number in case someone wants to buy an image or contact me about it.

Now look for the little triangle pointed left at the top left of the box. Click it and then click Save Metadata Template. Give it a name. Something spiffy like Firstname 2007.

Click CANCEL so nothing is written to the image. It really doesn't matter but I wanted you to see what happens next. If you forget to click cancel the world will not end and you won't notice any difference.

With an image open, click the actions tab. Click the "flyout menu arrow" up near the top right. Select New Set. Name the set. I named mine My Actions (because that's how I roll). Select My Actions from the actions menu. Click the flyout menu and select New Action. Name it Copyright Info or something like that and hit Record.
Click File --> File Info --> Select the flyout menu ---> Click on the Metadata template that you just created.Click Ok. On the actions menu (bottom) click the far left square to stop recording the action.
Click the flyout menu. If you like the action (didn't hose it up somehow) then click Save Actions and it will be there the next time you start Photoshop.

Now when you want to put your info in a file all you have to do is click on the action name and hit the run button (triangle pointed to the right)

Or you can batch a bunch of images by selecting File--> Automate--> Batch and follow the stuff in the menu. It's a small action so it would knock out a hundred images really quickly.

Michael,

Does this only put it in grayscale or B&W?

How do I go about, doing it in color?

Thanks,
A

Hey Angel. Sorry about not responding sooner. I've been out.

Use the color picker to pick the color that you want the text to be in. It looks like a little eyedropper.

Michael thanks for posting this and yes I realize it is old, but I am having a problem with the copywrite mark in the file info part. I have vista and it will not let me type anything holding down the alt key. Do you have any ideas?

Wow... Vista hosed up the alt characters? I wouldn't have though that they would do that since that's an international standard thingy. Have you tried it with num-lock on and off (I can never remember which way. I think on is correct)

This might help LINK

It works with Vista. Could be the NUM lock. It needs to be on, or use the top number keys.

A reminder.....

One must remember not to use the "SAVE FOR WEB" function in photoshop to save your file or all the EXIF and IPTC info will be stripped from the file.

HELP Please - 01-12-2008, 02:26 PM

Ok, after reading the instructions above I went and dug out my copy of the photoshop CS2 book for digital photographers. I followed the instructions in the book and made a brush to use on the laptop. It works fine. Went to the desktop and did the same thing. BUT the brush will not work. Figured I did something wrong so I made another one paying close attention to make sure I did it right. And I did. AND the new brush will NOT work either! Both of them are there and I can select either one I choose. I just can not use them. Anyone got an idea as to what the problem is?
