Photo mounting question - 08-02-2007, 05:54 PM

I'm about to place my first order of large prints (16 x 20) and will have them mounted, but am confused about my mounting options. I'm using Miller's and can use 3/16 foam board or masonite. Does anyone have suggestions on which to use? These will be portraits for framing. Thanks.

Masonite is the most stable and durable, however we usually mount 16X20's that will be framed on double weight art board. It costs quite a bit less and works fine up to 20X24. Larger than that we have mounted on foam board.

Masonite is certainly more durable but on larger prints (20x30 and up) get heavy. If you are framing foam board should be fine but if you dont frame use masonite. Foam board can be easily broken by weight etc.

Are they going to be hot pressed? if so foam board might not work.

If you are framing them, foamcore is fine, but I would recommend 3/16 instead of 1/8. Some frames, especially inexpensive ready-mades may not have enough rabbet depth to support that. If you are framing them, then you don’t necessarily need to have them professionally dry or cold mounted. You can consider less expensive and more archival t-hinging depending on the environment they will be displayed. If you are going to leave them unframed then you need something that is stronger and more rigid than foamcore such as gatorboard. I have created a web page with lots of info about mounting techniques here.

Cheers,
Mark
