CS2 Raw -> Jpeg conversion off - 08-05-2007, 09:45 PM

Hi all -
Was wondering if anyone had run into this oddity:
I've been shooting raw for my workflow, all the corrections and editing in psd files, with a last step converting to jpeg for some shots.
The strange thing I've noticed lately is that when placing the image still within photoshop on the screen next to the exact same image just-converted to Jpeg, the two images are dramatically different. The brightness of the Jpeg is off, colors and saturation are very muted.
Sitting here wondering if I've accidently tripped some setting I'm not aware of - because I don't remember the images being this degraded in the past...
Sorry - kinda hard to show an example here because the jpeg will likely look just fine to you folks, but it sure looks poor next to the "original".
btw: I'm converting to JPEG, 8-bit, "Original" mode, full size (setting=12). Not much else to tweak.
Any ideas? (I can really boost the colors and saturation in the psd file so that it looks eyefully-harsh and then after converting to jpeg it looks better, but.... )

Thanks

hmm, sorry I rarely use psd's I usually save to tiff. I haven't noticed a difference in cs3 between tiff's and jpgs.

What colorspace are you using?

If you are viewing the JPG in a colorspace other than sRGB in a viewer/browser it'll look dull. When converting to JPG, I typically "convert to sRGB" prior. Otherwise, I am working in Prophoto RGB for my PSD/Raw work.

This may or may not be your problem. Figured I'd throw it out there..

Good luck!

Excellent - thanks, that was exactly the problem! My default Destination Space was set back to CMYK. ( Odd, I don't remember changing that...)
Convert back to sRGB and all's well!
Thanks again...
