Batch converting .nef to jpg - 08-07-2007, 08:25 PM

Okay, I figure it is time for me to learn how to do this. I always convert them one at a time as I edit them in Photoshop. I'm now running into compatibility issues with Vista and windows RAW viewer so I can't even view them without opening in Photoshop.

Can someone explain how to batch convert. I am assuming it is something that can be set up in photoshop, correct? Or is there another program that I should use? My Nikon software won't work with Vista either. lol

I use Adobe bridge.
go to folder where pics are
1 Tools
2 Photoshop
3 Image Processor

I also use the batch re-name in bridge. makes it really easy.
I do have some problems sometimes with it not re-naming them all. If it does, I just go to the folder and see what the number was of the last one, then go back to bridge and re-name the ones that it did not get.

I have not run Vista yet. I never downloaded the windows Raw viewer either. I just use Canon's Zoom Browser to view. When I had Nikon I just used Nikon View.

Yeah, what he said. Except for the renaming, thats exactly how I do it. Image Processor. Took me a long time to figure that one out (I'm not of the 'asking' mindset....yes...that means I get lost and wander around aimlessly a lot because I refuse to stop and ask for directions)

Jeff, I use Capture NX, which is a great program. You can simply save a batch of files as JPG or TIFF and the conversion is excellent. Note also that Capture will honor the camera settings for sharpeness, contrast, etc, whereas Photoshop or Bridge will not.

Thanks everyone and keep the ideas coming. Paco, have you used Bibble? I just downloaded the "lite" version as a trial. The cost is $70. Obviously I want a program that will convert without losing any sharpness or contrast. I am just messing with Bibble now so I don't know how it holds up to NX. Capture is the first one I looked at but the price tag is pretty nice. lol

Hi Jeff. I have never used Bibble. I have always used Capture NX because I love its conversion from NEF to JPEG ( as good as what Capture One does) and also the Control Point feature. The best investment I made, much cheaper than Photoshop and very powerful for RAW file processing. I am sure other packages out there are fine too, but I have my digital workflow pretty well defined with Capture NX and Photoshop.

Photoshop Actions - 08-08-2007, 10:31 AM

I would create an Action in Photoshop to do this. Open an NEF and Record the process as an Action. Then use File/Automate/Batch command to run it on all or any images thereafter.
