maybe a dumb question ;) - 08-07-2007, 09:27 PM

I am confused about something that is probably very simple but I can't seem to get it!
I had a pregnancy shoot on the weekend that I am about to start proofing... but client wants original size images I agreed to sell them to her. I started taking pictures in raw like a week ago so I am still very new to it.. but ok so my question is the picture that I open in photoshop is this size for example
width 11.52in x height 7.68in 300pixels/inch
so when client wants original size do I not crop anything? I leave it as is? but just edit around it? or do I do a big crop and they can still print a 4x6 and a 5x7 and a 8x10? or should I do crops for all those sizes I may never finish LOL
what should I do?
TIA!

Here's what I usually do, I hope I am doing this in the correct way....
if you check the camera, the raw image that you taken should be in 3504x 2336 pixels, if you need to crop certain images, make sure you "custom" the crop size(click n hold the crop tool and you will see" 4x6/5x7/etc" , and also "custom"...). Everytime I need to crop an image, I'd make sure the crop size is 3504x2336.I think that will keep the "original" size of the image that we are talking about.

I hope you get what I meant. and also, if I did this wrong, I hope someone can correct me and teach me to do it in the right way....

one more thing I promise ;) I think LOL
ok so the file size of raw image is about 7.28MB and at 240dpi
so when I am doing a custom crop at 504x2336 I leave the 240 dpi and save us after I am done editing and my file size is only about 561KB, some up to 1MB
is it ok?

Loana, I think you set the crop size wrong? or you just left out the "3" above in your respond? It should be 3504x2336. I checked on my cropped images, 3504x2336, 240 dpi, the file size is about 4 MB. You might want to double check.

No prob. I am still learning CS2, i'd be more than happy to help if I know the answer.... :)

(I'm guessing "504x2336" was a just a keystroke error) I think that may also be due to how much of the original file was cropped out. There's only so much data available, even if the original file was shot in RAW. I have that problem on and off myself. Through suggestions by other members, I've found that I don't lose as much data in post-processing if I frame the image in my camera's viewfinder to my liking before pressing the shutter button. But I do make mistakes and sometimes forget the image straight out my camera is a 2:3 ratio (4x6, 8x12,12x18, etc...) So I may really like how my image looks at 4x6, but then I lose a lot of data/surrounding edges when I try to apply a 4x5 or 8x10 crop in post.
