Question New LCD monitor creating havoc - 09-07-2007, 05:00 PM

Hi gang,

This is my first post in this forum. A few days back, I purchased a new widescreen Samsung LCD monitor to upgrade my old LCd. It required 1680x1050 resolution support, so I downloaded new drivers for my ATI Radeon video card. Since then, I've been having issues with Photoshop during both startup ("The monitor profile "Samsung - Natural Color Pro 1.0 ICM" appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software.), as well as during the editing process (when I "edit in CS3" option in Lightroom, CS3 will ask me to convert, assign, or disable color management profile). The biggest headache is not knowing which color space to edit in and export to.

I've never had these issues with my old monitor. I understand the basics of sRGB, Adobe RGB, and ProPhotoRGB, in theory. Some people tell me to just set everything to sRGB, but then it makes me wonder why ProPhoto and Adobe RGB's even exit. They're better and possess a wider range, but if our monitors can't display them, why use them? Maybe photo labs print in those "superior" color spaces?

And by the way, I'm resorting to purchasing a calibration kit (Huey) as a possible solution to my monitor profiling problem with Photoshop. I wanted to save up for new lenses, but I suppose this is a necessity.

Thanks advance for your thoughts and advice.

Chi

New LCD monitor creating havoc - 09-07-2007, 07:45 PM

I had the same problem about a month ago. Their program, Natural Color Pro would not work with my video card either. I called Samsung and much to my surprise, after pushing different buttons, the phone was answered by a person who spoke perfect English. When I told him I was having problems with my photos using photoshop, he told me that he also was using photoshop and walked me right through with the correct settings.

They were unable to solve the Natural Color Pro problem but everything else is fine. I'm sorry I don't have their number, but try giving them a call.

Good Luck...... I really like my wide screen.......

Update on this issue: I received the calibration kit called "Huey". Within minutes, it corrected my color profile on my LCd and loaded the "correct" profile with Photoshop automatically. Now when I export photos in sRGB from Lightroom, it looks like what it did in ProPhotoRGB in LR, and CS3 doesn't complain any more.

After looking through my photos, I realized how un-caliberated my monitor was before.
