stills to video - 09-11-2007, 12:10 PM

I have a long sequence of still images that I'd like to convert to video as part of something I'm working on.

Looking for recommendations for the best software to do that with.

Rough requirements:

I have about 400 frames at ~ 2048x1500 that I want to work with
I want to be able to apply an mp3 as the background track

I want to be able to control the display times for each frame, to speed up/ slow down the image display rate

What would you recommend as the most painless approach for this ?

Vegas Video would be painless if you already had it. It is high end video production software that works well with stills and audio tracks.

Thats all I can offer since it has been what I have been using for picture slideshows.

HATE to ask MAC or PC platform? if its on a mac iphoto/imovie will easily handle the 400 frames with transitions as far as 2048 x 1500 resolution i dont know. other than that burn to dvd good to go.

I recently bought this software Proshow Producer I have Adobe Production Suite for editing video but I found Pro Show and have found it to be easier to work with. Fast results and a the output options are great. I can out put a slide show to an avi and then bring it into Premier to add to a video or play to tape. If you have dsl you can download it and use it right away and they will send you the box and real cd in the mail.

Hmm, I do have the low end proshow standard - maybe that'll do what I need. I'm not looking at doing anything fancy interms of transitions, just need to control the display rate easily for multiple frames and also just be able to handle the volume of frames/ size in something of a sane way.

This is currently PC based. I suppose I could always use the free movie maker with windows too.

proshow will work fine. import all photos, select and drop on bottom pan. then select all from bottom pan and change timimg on one slide and that will change timimg on all slide. drag mp3 on music bar and you will have music on it. Then you can burn dvd or avi or can do many more thing.

Pro Show Gold is cool.. Take a look at an app called Photo to Movie

I bought it for the Mac awhile back and its gone through a lot of upgrades and ported to the PC. It was a very cool inexpensive application when I used it.

Here is a interesting gallery of what it can do as well..

A further question down this path - it certainly looks like I can do what I want with proshow (standard or gold)

can I make auto-runnable videos for CD, that will work on both PC and Mac (same disk ?)

it has been my experience that a dvd not dependant on a program. (i.e. can play on any dvd player) will play on mac or pc.

macs don't allow auto-play..
they don't dig cds taking over the user's computer, lest the user asks for it to

For FWIW, I tried proshow gold for a few days. It kept crashing, couldn't handle the number of images I wanted to work with, was slow, unresponsive. I get the feeling just not really designed for this sort of application.

I tried windows movie maker and it sort of worked, but again had a hard time.

I downloaded Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 yesterday and it breezed through 3000 frames in a few seconds. No real problems at all. Still taking some time to get to grips with the editing tools, but it seems to be doing what I need.

Cool, I have Premiere Pro 2 but never failed when I brought in stills I was always fighting with the aspect ratio. I know since I got Proshow Producer I have had six updates. Maybe they rush to get it on the market. They do seem to get fixes done fast.

Over the time I've been thinking about doing this, my requirements have drifted quite a bit - I'm now up to about 3000 frames, but at around 800x800 sort of resolution

I've been using the Sony Vegas Movie Studio for the last couple of days and having good results with that.
