SanDisk UltraII 4gB problem .. need help - 09-22-2007, 12:38 AM

I just purchased a new 4gB SD card today ... and I was successful to format the 4gB SD card in my 1dmkII camera, and I filled it this evening with volleyball and homecoming pics ... now I can't transfer images off .. when I insert the card into my computers reader, it doesn't seem to recognize the SD card at all.

I transfered images from other SD cards taken tonight as well ....

any thoughts appreciated.

Randy

I think that all 4 gb SD cards are a different format (SDHC) and cannot be read my the normal SD card reader. I think that when I bought my San Disk 4 gb it came with a USB reader.

Until you can get a card reader for that card, you can use the camera connected to the computer with a USB cable.

This is not entirely correct Dick. I have the exact same camera as Randy is using, the same firmware upgrades, several different brand, first generation 4 GB SD cards (no Sandisk) a Sandisk multi card USB2 reader that is several years old, and have never experienced his problem. There must be something else awry here for Randy.

One additional note here...my cards are early 4GB cards, when 4 GB was as big as SD cards came, and they don't have the HC designation printed on them. However, I now have a new 8 GB SDHC card, that i use in the MkIII, that I read in the very same reader without any problems.

Paul, and Dick -

Well guys, I finally tried one more thing ... the SanDisk card I bought came with a "little" funky looking card reader that plugs into a USB port .... the computer was able to read the card using that card reader. However, if I plug it into the SD card reader on my laptop, it doesn't even recognize that the SD card is plugged in. So the good news is that it is working so I don't have to download from my camera. The bad news is, that I have to keep up with "another" gadget, that is susceptible to breaking. Jeeesh.

Thanks for your inputs and support.
Randy

I accidentally tried using my 'regular' card reader to read my 4 Gb SDHC card and it freaked the card reader out. But everything works fine when I use it with the tiny USB card reader that came with the card. And that card reader seems ok with all the rest of my SD cards too, so that's the one I'll take with me when I travel.

My dad had the same issue this weekend. We tried 4 different card readers with his new 4GB SD card and only one reader (mine) worked. He went to WalMart and picked up a new reader and it was fine. I believe it was a Sandisk card and we had 2 older Sandisk readers and a different off-brand that all had trouble. He bought a new Sandisk multicard reader and all is well.
