Question Layers help - 09-27-2007, 01:17 PM

I did a shoot for a door company this weekend, and the door had this horrible lighting problem. It's in a spot where going at a better time of day does not help, so I had to resort to photoshopping the image. I'm not really happy with the result, but it's the best I've been able to do. Any suggestions?

The After looks 100% better.

Next time try some fill flash to help with the lighting/shadows.

Thanks. I did try fill flash, but it just wasn't strong enough to do much good. And it left a glare on the door.

I'm not sure what the intention of the photo or ad would be. If the intent is how good these doors are, I'd think warm and inviting. Here I lightened it a bit, did some sharpening and tried to lead the entry way lighter in the middle to the center of the doors where it was lighter as well. I'm sure someone more skilled could spend the few minutes I did and carry this off better.

A Scrim is needed to block / diffuse the light.

Perhaps the pay was good enough to buy or make one !

Yeah, I don't have a scrim, but that's a good idea. It's not paying well enough yet for me to haul even the equipment I do have around with me. Plus, someone was living in the home. I don't like to try people's patience! LOL

I believe they're planning to use the photographs on their website as examples of what they offer. Here's their site:

When I saw the first image and the blown out lower left, I thought to myself, there is no data there to fix. However, when I saw the second image I was amazed at the difference. But then I saw the "xif fix" after a few seconds - most people wouldn't. In fact I probably wouldn't have had I not been prompted to look for it. I do think Andy's tweek helps it too.

Nice PS skills

Rick

Rachel, you took a very creative approach to fixing a problem and did an awesome job at it.

That's pretty good (both of the fixes)... I was right along there with Rick when I saw the first one

Did you just create a new layer of the right side, and flip it? That's what I would have done.

Looks good.

Thanks!

Tom, I straightened and cropped it first, then flipped the whole image and saved a second copy. Then I layered them and erased the bad side. Then I did some lens distortion correction. I had tried just flipping one side of the door, but I couldn't get it to line up correctly. The trick ended up being getting the stones on each side of the door exactly the same width. Make sense? I'm not great at explaining stuff.
