I have a background with lots, and I mean lots of layers. I want to change the orignal background, from the picture to a black. Is that possible?? It appears to be locked???

Photoshop? Generally the bottom layer is locked. You'd have to slide another layer overtop of that bottom later. That's how I usually do it, and it'll achieve the same results.

I'm not sure if it's the same for CS3, but for PS7 if you just double click the locked background layer it will unlock. It pops up a little window that says "New Layer" allowing you to name it to something else and set a few more options.
