If you are wondering " why shoot in RAW?" - 10-11-2007, 06:09 AM

We have a constant influx of new digital photographers who start out using the P setting, and shooting in .jpg. I have no problem with that. But, many want to move away from full program and get into controlling their images themselves. We often hear "why should I shoot RAW?"
I thought that I would post this shot and try to illustrate how RAW can help recover an otherwise lost image.
I shot this at the FW zoo. The first image is original out of camera except for web sizing in CS. It is generallly unusable because the duck body is "blown out". The second is adjusted in Lightroom. I won't get into details, except that I made the "normal" adjustments to the RAW file.
I know,,, initial exposure compensation would have solved the problem, but this example is to show that you can recover a decent image after the fact.

The November issue of Popular Photography has a good article on RAW vs. JPEG. I'd link to it but they don't have it up on their website yet.

The new version of LR really helps pull back the semi blown out images. But still amazing to see that illustrated in your image. Thanks for reminding me why I shoot raw
