Hey all --
i'm pretty new to CS2, and retouching portraits. what's the best (possibly the quickest?) way to fix this little guy's bags under the eyes, and to correctly adjust, or enhance, his skin tone? (been playing with curves and healing brush, but not getting results i want??)
also, i read on a past thread to "whiten teeth" in the post process... what tool does that?

For the bags, try the smudge tool at around 30% with a small (about the size of the boy's pupil) brush. Make small strokes from below toward the bags to shrink them. It's easy to overdo it so you might want to start with 15% until you get the hang of it.

I'd try duplicating that layer, then use the healing brush on the bags. Make sure the new layer is on top, then adjust it's opacity to taste.

Apply a photo filter/warming, and adjust to taste. Then you can go back with the history tool and remove the warming where you don't want it (like on his blue shirt).

For whitening teeth, I select the teeth using Quick Mask and the brush tool. Exit Quick Mask and inverse selection. Create a color balance adjustment layer and add blue to the midtown and then blue to the highlights. Merge down. Once you get used to it, it only takes a minute.

Check out pluggins Portraiture and iCorrect Portrait. There is a good stand alone app called Portrait Professional too..
You can do anything these apps can do within PS... But they make it a lot faster if you're doing a lot of them.
Just another option for thought..

If I am in a rush and most of the time I am I just use the dodge tool to whiten teeth. You have to be careful or they will get a rabbit look.

My suggestion is ... he is a child, if his bags under his eyes are always there, leave them there ... you do not want him to think he is not perfect as he is. I am a child photographer, I never touch up a child.

Doublicate layer, set to Overlay, adjust Opasity
Use Marquee tool on teeth, Ctrl-U and desaturate
Ctrl-L adjust levels
Ctrl-M create S-Curve
Flatten Image
Use dodge tool on eyes (Highlights, 50%)
For some parts, use Filters>Blur>Gaussian blur
