As much as I don't want to show what an idiot I am, I want to be able to use Lightroom more
I selected every image that I have on my D: drive for the Folders tab 2,674 RAW files. Most are 16Mb in size. Needless to say Lightroom is a tad sluggish right now. How do empty the folder without deleting all of the files?

If you imported the images to be stored into LR's database, you can delete the photos.
I believe that was what you did, if LR is being sluggish. You can make sure by right-clicking on one of the picture and click on the item to show the actual file.
What I always do is move the files to a location on my own, and create my own LR's database for each events on that location. That way, it doesn't import the photos into LR's database and I think that is a lot faster.

That's what I did. I only needed one folder but when it started up for the first time it had all of the folders checked so I just clicked ok

Well, if you didn't import the photos into LR's database, then I wouldn't want to delete the original files.
If you meant on deleting the files off your LR's list, then make sure you have a backup of the files. I believe when you delete in LR, it prompts you whether or not to remove the original files.

Yes. Deleting would put them all in the recycle bin. It warned me. I forget what the other option was but it was non-destructive and things are good.

One other thing about LR you can have it re-org the database to make it faster. If you do not know how I will get you the info. It helped me alot I have about 30k images in my DB and was slow until I did this... | | | |

When you ask Lightroom to Delete a file is prompts you... asking you if you want to simply remove the file from within Lightroom (which is what you're wanting) or to physically delete the file from disk. Choose remove instead of delete.
In my opinion, when you are importing RAW files into Lightroom, asking LR to copy them into its own database is a bad idea. This effective doubles the amount of disk space these files take up on your hard drive. Import them "as their original location" will just tell LR to link to those locations. You'll get the same exact effect with half the storage space.

I agree with Wil's statement above. But I'd go one further, even JPG's I never import into LR's database.

as long as i saw the post on lightroom - i need some help understanding the color space with regard to exporting.
there are 3 choices, prophoto, srgb, and adobe 1998. now i am aware that srgb is the preferred color space for web viewing, but there is a noticeable difference between the 3. (using acdsee to show comparison - so perhaps that is the culprit).
so for printing - which color space would you export as?
thanks sooo much for any replies on this subject.

- Wil | Thank you! I didn't realize that was an option. That'll help speed up my workflow.

Janice, I can't tell which is which colorspace. In CS3 I do all of my correction in 16 bit Pro Photo but save as L10 JPG and Adobe 1998 if I am going to send it out for print. Colorspace and printing is something that I haven't fully grasped yet so take that with a grain of salt.

I also agree with Louis about the part about not importing in JPGs... or any other file type besides RAW. There are, for me, only two exceptions to this rule.
1. For quick off-the-cuff web slideshow from some random old photos. I'll bring them in, create the slideshow, and then remove them from LR.
2. For a Collection of "Featured Photos" or pose samples. These photos are final (12-quality, 0-compression) JPGs that have my logo on them. The are for show only. Sometimes, I just prefer to show clients examples... and I don't want to go into ProSelect to do that. LR does a much better job, in my opinion, of quickly showing and zooming photos than ProSelect.
I think that's just about the only reason I would import a JPG in LR... but I'll give it some though.
As for color space... you need to work in and output to the colorspace of your printer/lab. This is a very complicated topic that deserves its own thread... and comments from Jeff Kohn.

If y'all don't mind me jumping in here, after installing lightroom to experiment to see if I like it, whenever I load in an SD card now, lightroom automatically starts. I've tried to find the preference for this but somehow seem to be missing it. I personally prefer to use Bridge (for now anyway) ... until I can learn more about lightroom. It's just a pain at the moment to have to cancel out of LR everytime I insert a card. Any suggestions appreciated.

Randy | To change the way importing acts when inserting a memory card into a card reader select, from the pull down menu, EDIT, PREFERENCES, IMPORT, and uncheck the first selection reading "Select import dialog when a memory card is detected".
