IPTC Data - 11-22-2007, 12:07 PM

Before getting Photoshop I got a database program called CyPics. That is where I enter keywords and organize my photos. I never wanted to take the hours and hours it would require to convert my files from CyPics to Bridge, and to re-enter all the data info. I don't know of an easier way to convert them so I am sticking with CyPics for now.

As I increase my usage of Bridge to screen and batch rename files, I see the IPTC fields. I have used the meta data many times, but when is the IPTC data used? For a non-typist filling in these blanks takes a lot of time. I can use a macro program to speed up filling in those blanks unless there is a Bridge way that prepopulates the fields, but who uses these fields, when and why?

I'm not a real fan of Wikipedia, but see if this helps.

I do. You can set up an action to do it for you in PS or in Bridge, select as many files as you want, click File, then File Info, and whatever you set is saved for all the files you selected.

I use the IPTC fields constantly for a couple of things.

I have about 270K images in my database ... everything from shows to events to portrait and commercial sessions. The app that I use to manage my database is called Imatch

In my workflow I key word and cul in bridge and import into I match for cataloging and archiving. The keywords that I enter is captured in imatch and the images are cataloged.

so when I search for the keyword "white" I get all of the images wth that keyword

Also when i submit to stock those fields are carried over to the stock site so I do not have to reenter as much data

It makes tha management of a large database fairly easy

If you are going to be submitting to Services such a AP you will have to use the IPTC fields.
Here are the AP standards for them. Here is how they are used.

MediaGrid and, I believe, Photo Mechanic should be able to batch infuse IPTC fields. I use MediaGrid for my DoD work (which has strict requirements similar to AP's).
