D300 and Picture Control files - 12-06-2007, 12:51 PM

I've been playing with my D300 and the new (to me) ability to share Picture Control settings. I downloaded Ken Rockwell's PCF he posted on his website.

The attched two photos show the out of camera results. The first is the in camera Neutral setting, the second is using Ken's over the color top PCF.

Shot was into the sun, no post process other than resizing.

Wow that's a striking difference. What is PCF and is it something applied in PP?

Picture Control Files can be managed as a file by saving the settings. Customized Picture Control settings can be stored as Custom Picture Controls. Stored Custom Picture Control files can be used with other Picture Control-compatible cameras via memory card.

Depending of how you use the PCFs and how much work you can or want to do PP. I kinda went to extremes here to show the effects.

The difference between them is very dramatic which leads me down the path of putting another check into the positive column for the D300. PCF appears to be a very useful and desirable feature. Thanks for clarifying it for me.
