high key - 12-10-2007, 02:56 PM

ok I hadn't tried high key in a while.. I tried it once and it looked grey and gave up for a while LOL..... well yesterday I had a Christmas shoot for a baby girl and I was trying to figure out a color background I had that would bring her colors up so I gave it a shot
what do you think?

I had 4 lights with each one having a 500 watt blue light bulb two pointed to the back and two to her.. I did nothing to background just post processed the pic by adding a bit of saturation and contrast other than that that's it!

I'm not an expert, but they still look grey. Not enough contrast and vibrance. The last one isn't grey but it doesn't pop at you. Maybe a little more saturation, it looks a little flat. I love the pose with the hat over the face but it is very greyish. Can you adjust the whitepoint on that one to give it some pizazz. Overall great poses, just needs a little PP to spice them up and make them festive enough.

Very cute, and I agree about the post. Nothing 1 minute wouldn't help, though. My take below.

so on bridge you moved the exposure a bit more, decreased brightness, added a bit contrast, saturation, and vibrance

yup...when I looked at your photo in the OP, it looked like it was underexposed by about a stop....when I adjusted it, I went +1 over. It seemed a little too hot, so I brought brightness down just a bit. Although, the WB looks off in my version...at least the skin tones do...I like Tom's edit better there.

It was just a real quick edit, took maybe 5 seconds.....

Another way to do that would be to duplicate the background and use layer masks to achieve the effect too.

Just played around a little with levels, sharpness, and sats. I've already spoken with Abel about putting on a workshop after the first of the year that covers some of this, as well as a lot of other things to make you successful at making money doing this if you're interested. Stay tuned.

I like the last one out of the most recent you just posted(but the background has a green-ish tint to me). Maybe play around with a little more saturation (+3 to 5). But that's a personal taste.

Loana, the original images has potential but it does look underexposed (to me). If you can get your exposure closer to what you want in camera, the fine tuning necessary afterwards is a little less hassle.

That said, I only have Microsoft Office Picture Manager(no sharpening tool) at work but was still able to play around with your image...Your CS3 offers you a vast amount of tools to really bring these out even more than I can...
